The May Report: 4/30/2012: Here's what happens when I sit on a story, no matter how benign: Dan Ehrmann of www.clubexpress.com has hired two new employees since we spoke in February! He had 6 people then, now presumably he has 8. I forgot to mention that while he was attending CCEA last Thursday, Bill Anthony's 2007 Honda Accord was stolen from Randolph and Wells (I think); www.xolve.com, out of UW-Madison and working with WARF is closing on a $2MM extension of Series A in June and seeks a $4MM Series B round in 2013, but that's secondary: the important thing is that they're claiming to have game-changing technology since 2008 which allows for solubility of nanomaterials and they're focusing on graphene for composite and energy storage materials

I've been sitting on this for months now, since round about February 15th.
Dan Ehrmann runs a small "Software-as-a-Service" business that is not especially sexy but it's profitable and growing organically.
It may not appeal to VCs who are looking for a 10x return in 3-5 years, but reality is that Dan's business is typical of many in Chicago.
http://www.clubexpress.com/

I've known Dan Ehrmann since the mid-1980s.
Way back then, I was a headhunter in the IT world and I used to go to various user group meetings (Ingres, Oracle, Pick, Paradox, SQL, etc.)
Dan Ehrmann ran a Paradox user meeting which met in various places but for a while at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in the Standard Oil (now Aon) building.
Dan parlayed his database knowledge into a software development firm called Kallista that he ran for 11 years.
In 1998, he sold that firm to USWeb as one of 45 acquisitions they made.
Dan became a managing partner for USWeb prior to the merger with Whittman-Hart.
http://news.cnet.com/USWebCKS-to-merge-with-Whittman-Hart/2100-1040_3-234307.html
After that, he did a variety of things, including a stint as COO for Zipple, a couple of other startups including a training firm, and a few months with Risetime. He also taught classes at DePaul. ClubExpress is Dan's fourth startup; he started it in 2003 and they launched in March, 2004.

ClubExpress provides a platform to help clubs and associations run their complete front-office and back-office. They focus on smaller clubs that are generally run by volunteers or a part-time paid person. In the U. S. alone, there are a half million clubs and associations with fewer than 5,000 members. ClubExpress has found a niche in more than a dozen markets, including hobby and enthusiast clubs (such as car clubs), leisure and active sports clubs (more than 40 cycling groups and more than 60 sailing clubs), alumni clubs, community service clubs such as Rotary, professional and trade associations (ITDA used ClubExpress for a while, contracted by my old friend, Rachel Rusch), social clubs, mothers playgroups, fraternities, chambers of commerce, homeowner and condo associations, religious groups.

Much of their business is through referrals and word-of-mouth but they also do pay-per-click advertising and have an inside sales team.
Since February, he's hired two more people.
Competitors include two Canadian firms – WildApricot and ClubRunner (they focus on Rotary clubs).

He comes across as someone who is very conservative in his personal habits and proclivities. But as is often the case with such people, Dan owns a Morgan sports car and has driven it at over 120 mph. The Windy City Morgan Owners Club was ClubExpress's first customer.
The reason I happened to be talking to Dan is that one of my elves told me that there was a problem with ClubExpress. Dan explained that it was no big deal since they were doing a new release of the software and there had been a glitch which resulted in some people getting unintended emails. The problem was quickly fixed and there were no security breaches.

Dan doesn't go to many of the networking meetings around town, but he is active in the Big Idea Forum.
