 | | [Actually 4/4/2012]: The May Report: 4/4/2012: Scoop day at TMR! The mystery and highly secret name of the key investor in Techweek is "Ian from Guild Capital." But I give up! I need your help. This reminds me of the day the whole Chicago tech community came together to confirm the rumor I'd heard, namely that the new name of the firm resulting from the merger of Whittman-Hart and usWeb/cks was marchFIRST. That day, possibly the best day in the history of TMR, had three reports and each one got us closer to the truth. I had been approached the night before at a meeting at the Gleacher Center and I announced it at the TiE meeting I attended later that night, but it was still just a rumor. By the end of the next day, March 17, 2000, we had confirmation on the name and even had access to the test site which was unprotected; well, and that night Bob Bernard and I spoke by phone and he said I was a Kamakize who had ruined his $50MM roll-out campaign, and remember, the back-up name was Primary Red; Last night at Rockit, I found out that the mystery and highly secret name of the key investor in Techweek is "Ian from Guild Capital." Well, I've spent a lot of time on this since last night. Guild Capital from where? NYC, LA, there are a number of Guild Capital firms including Guild Investment; Ian who? I could not find anyone named Ian at any firm named Guild. Then, a break in the case -- one of my unnamed elves who knows how to find things on the net much better than I came up with this: It's Lian Shovlin and he's listed as having contributed $2,500 to the Quigley campaign and his firm affiliation is Guild Capital, LLC; and then it was off to the races, and here's what I found ... and the plot thickens.. Does anyone have an actual phone number and address for this guy; I was told that Guild Capital does not have an internet presence, and what is the connection, if any, to Technology Crossover Ventures? Is the Iain or Ian or Lian Shovlin of Guild Capital, LLC the same as the person on Built in Chicago and the same as the person with Technology Crossover Ventures? It's not just a mystery about the person or people funding Techweek, but it's also about the mystery of Iain or Ian or Lian Shovlin. Can anyone shed light on this?

* Last night was an 8 on a scale of 1-10 from the standpoint of good conversations and also good information. That is how I really judge events, not on the number of people, but on the quality of information I garner.
Much more to come, but first my big scoop of the night. Take that Wailin Wong, Lynne Marek, Steve Hendershot, Sandra Guy, John Pletz, Adam Calica, Seth Kravitz and the Technori crew, Ed Domain and the Tech.li crew, Kathryn Born and the TINC Mag. crew, Anna Marie Kukec, and many others.
As I told Caity Moran, Meagan Lopez, and Andrea Moran (no relation to Caity that I know of) last night as we talked outside Rockit, to do this job you have to: 1.Show up and be there; 2. Not just be there, but work the crowd, and don't just talk to people you already know; 3. Do aggressive and persistent questioning and follow-up.
* Before the scoop, a correction. According to Adam Calica from Built in Chicago, they now have 7,893 members, not the 6,000 that I reported. Membership is free and anyone can post.
* Here are the facts I've gathered thus far with respect to the mystery of who the key behind the scenes investor is in Techweek.

8. I also saw one reference on Google to Ian being listed as one of Matt Moog's friends, but now I can't find that..
* BTW, Sonny Cohen and Michael Silverman of Duo Consulting, you got the Built in Chicago contract for the conversion from Ning to Drupal because the consultant they had flaked on them.
Read this post from Matt Moog.

Built In Chicago launched nearly 18 months ago using Ning, the simplest and cheapest social platform available. As it grew and Maria Katris came on board to manage our growth, it became apparent that we had outgrown Ning. We wanted to add a company directory and a job board and improve other areas of the service. The problem was that we had no technical staff. So like any lean and mean startup we found a contractor who knew Drupal and started working with him to move the site to the Drupal platform. Unfortunately 75% of the way into the project he totally flaked out and fell off the face of the earth. Fortunately our friends at Duo Consulting helped us pick up the pieces and push toward a full launch.
Unfortunately Ning does not make it easy to leave their platform. And Drupal is also missing some social features that they really should have. So everything was a little harder than we would have liked. But Maria and Adam worked every angle to get it done.
The site now sports a much cleaner and more usable design. We have our fair share of kinks to work out, but the big challenge of getting off of Ning was the first big step. So bear with us as we work out of the kinks. And thank you to everyone who was shared the love on Twitter. Finally, thank you to Stedfast Networks for providing awesome and speedy hosting services.
So congratulations to Maria and Adam and thank you for your tireless devotion to the Chicago digital tech community.
