-- Eric Lannert and Sandee Kastrul (who was not there for a good reason) answer Ron's questions as a result of a long chat Ron and Eric had outside the ITA dinner where Ron was sitting on the sidewalk in his wheelchair
- Sandee and Eric explain the Legacy Project in which the ic stars model is extended to seven other cities, and it entails segments from all aspects of the community, a wide net, the exact opposite of what the ITA is now doing by reducing diversity, and I don't mean racial or ethnic, but rather a broad swath of the business, non-profit, university, NGO, venture, angel, and governmental sectors -- in short, when they could not get marquis names from Motorola, Boeing, and Groupon on their board, they decided to jettison the people they considered to be peons who were obstructing their achievement of their goals -- isn't that right Fred Hoch? Remember that it was not many years ago when Terry Howerton wanted to remove me from a riverfront party for suggesting that he and Hoch had missed the boat by not nominating FeedBurner which they considered a flash in the pan, unlike SurePayroll
- And the seven cities are:
- The new ic stars competitor in town, out of Boston, is YearUp. 203 N. LaSalle
- ic stars had its graduation on the 11th (I believe) and Sandee was busy with the CIO from NASA, Adrian Gardner who spoke to the grads on May 10th
- Leslie Beller, the founding head of ic stars, now has an important job at CPS
- This last email may represent the most fascinating conversation I've had all year, and it's far too complicated for a discussion now, but Eric, like Dave Ormesher, lives in Edgewater and he has some interesting things to say about choosing schools and the role of test scores

British PM David Cameron Tours Chicago's Digital Entrepreneur Hub "1871" Prior To NATO Summit
We are a city of builders, makers and doers. Perhaps it's our work ethic, or the simple pride of making something out of nothing. Either way, it’s what has defined our great city since its birth and rebirth in 1871 – when an entire community came together to build a new Chicago. This is the spirit that has shaped this place. It’s why we’re here – not as a testament to our storied past, but for the promise of what can be. Welcome to 1871.
UK leader meets with digital entrepreneurs, underscores role of start-ups in economic growth; invites Chicago delegation to UK's Tech City
CHICAGO, May 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Entrepreneurs at Chicago's new hub for digital start-ups, 1871, got a surprise visit Sunday from British Prime Minister David Cameron prior to the start of the NATO Summit. The Prime Minister spoke with several entrepreneurs about their businesses and Chicago's strong technology innovation sector, then toured the shared work space for digital start-ups that opened May in the historic Merchandise Mart building.
Mr. Cameron had asked to visit 1871 (www.1871.com) as part of his ongoing mission to strengthen economic ties between the UK and the United States -- especially in the technology sector, which he has described as having tremendous potential to fuel economic growth and job creation.
The 1871 entrepreneurs were only told the identity of their VIP guest moments before his arrival, for security purposes.
Upon his arrival, Mr. Cameron had a spirited conversation with three entrepreneurs, quizzing them about their businesses and the advantages of working in a tech "ecosystem" such as 1871:
Neal Sales-Griffin, founder of Code Academy, an immersive three-month training program housed in 1871 for people – often those who started in other careers -- who want to become web developers, designers and entrepreneurs.
Louise Monger, a UK native who recently located in 1871 to start up the US version of an interactive silent auction fundraising company, FunRaising Events USA.
Erik Severinghaus, founder of SimpleRelevance, which improves digital marketing conversion by using data to segment customers and personalize their messaging.
In his exchange with Monger, Mr. Cameron offered his view that "there's a great market" for her interactive fundraising service, and that the technology available to power her start-up is "fantastic." Perhaps her greatest challenge, he quipped, is making sure the technology can be used by "an 80-year-old philanthropist."
During his visit to 1871, the Prime Minister cited Tech City (www.techcityuk.com) in East London, an area with a network of start-ups and incubators alongside established technology companies such as Google and Cisco as well as university researchers and investors. He has said he intends for Tech City to become "one of the world's great technology centers."
The Prime Minister's tour was led by Kevin Willer, president and CEO of the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center (CEC). The CEC, which manages 1871, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to growing Chicago's entrepreneurial community.
After talking with the digital entrepreneurs and touring their co-working space, Mr. Cameron also met privately with a handful of Chicago-area business leaders, including J.B. Pritzker, World Business Chicago Board member and one of the founders of 1871, to promote investment in the UK and invite them to visit Tech City.
In addition to providing co-working space and a sense of community, 1871 features educational programming, events and seminars to help foster the growth of digital startups in Chicago, which has seen an explosion of growth in the sector. The name "1871" was inspired by the period of rapid innovation that followed immediately after The Great Chicago Fire in October of that year, when leading engineers, designers and builders came together to build a new city.

Hi Ron,
I don’t know if you remember, but back at the MIT Fair Pair event I introduced you to my new business, Fantasy Player Exchange. Our goal was to create a new format for fantasy sports marrying some of the traditional aspects within a framework of open market stock trading. I am pleased to announce that we have now received a good part of our funding (commitments close to $100k – half way to our goal but more than enough to sustain operations) and plan to launch our product at the end of June. My team and I are looking forward to introducing it to the world at Tech Week.
Thanks,
Gary Dollinger

We lost our sponsor, the law firm of Perkins Coie. Going forward, they want to focus on industry-specific events. Currently, we’re discussing whether or not to continue BNC StartUp.

Colleagues with interests in communication infrastructure and economic development,
Food for thought on opportunities for revenue-generation, financing and asset-appreciation of communication/utility/transportation assets including ROW and data exchange assets:
A. See attached Chicago Substitute Ordinance establishing Infrastructure Trust, including underlined amendments on City Council and public oversight, adopted April 24, 41-7.
Comment: Given the complexity of planning and financing communication infrastructure as part of economic development/public works/co-ordinate agency plans, and the availability of new City water rate revenues to finance combined water/sewer/conduit projects (up to 1500 miles in City plans), it would appear that simpler and less sensitive City services might be on the opening agenda of the Trust as it gets organized in the next 6 months. Stay tuned!
B. See May 22 APA Chicago Tuesday 5:30 event on Public-private financing opportunities, including TIF and other economic development models. 205 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 1200
Tuesdays at APA-Chicago -- Program on Tax Increment Financing May 22 5:30
http://www.planning.org/tuesdaysatapa/chicago/
C. See Marc Andreessen's recent projection of "next" revenue-growth areas for technology applications, as communications infrastructure and bandwidth expand:
Andreessen: The next stops, I believe, are education, financial services, health care, and then ultimately government-the huge swaths of the economy that historically have not been addressable by technology, that haven't been amenable to the entrance of Silicon Valley-style software companies. But increasingly I think they're going to be.

MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition Awards $100,000 Grand Prize to Startup That Connects Users’ Online Content to Web Applications
CAMBRIDGE, MA.-- (www.twitter.com/techaccesstv) -- CloudTop, a startup that has created a new set of tools that enables developers of Web applications to integrate users’ online content in a unified and simple way, was awarded the Robert P. Goldberg $100,000 grand prize Tuesday night after beating out seven other finalist teams during the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition finale held on the MIT campus.
“Our motto is ‘anywhere, anytime, any device,’”This year’s teams of finalists in the business plan contest – whose offerings included, among others, the cryopreserving of fish eggs and new patent-pending wireless throughput-increasing technology – emerged from a pool of 215 teams. A panel of judges made up of entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, scientists, and industry professionals chose CloudTop on the strength of their business plan and presentation.
By handling authentication and application programming interface integration, Cloudtop’s offering, Filepicker.io, allows developers to integrate Dropbox, Gmail, and other services into their application with only one line of code. Filepicker.io’s vision is to become the underlying infrastructure layer for Web applications that allow users to view, manage, and work on files entirely within their browser.
CloudTop was founded by Brett van Zuiden, 22, an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science student at MIT who was named by the Phenom List as one of the top five undergraduate computer scientists at MIT. Van Zuiden’s fellow co-founders are Anand Dass, 31, an MIT Sloan MBA 2012 who ran a $35 million sales organization at a global IT services company; Liyan David Chang, 22, an MIT senior studying Computer Science and Political Science who served as a key researcher in the MIT Media Lab’s Sixth Sense Project; and Thomas Georgiou, 19, an MIT sophomore studying Computer Science whose team won this year’s MIT 6.570 Mobile App Competition. Georgiou won first prize in the 2011 Facebook Hackathon held at MIT.
“Our motto is ‘anywhere, anytime, any device,’” says Dass. “Our goal is to usher in the future of computing by allowing access to all of a user’s content and applications. By winning the $100K, we are even better positioned to create our vision.”
The MIT $100K Competition’s runner-up team, LiquiGlide, also nabbed the Audience Choice Award sponsored by KPMG. LiquiGlide has created a super slippery coating that allows for easy and complete dispensing of food items such as ketchup and mayonnaise. Developed in the Varanasi Research Group at MIT, this new coating is made from nontoxic materials and is easily applied to food packaging.
The MIT startup Janus Data, which provides users with the opportunity to monetize data, was presented the Thomson Reuters Data Prize, a $10,000 award given to a team for the most innovative use of data as a core part of a company’s business plan.
The winner of the Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation YouPitch Prize was the MIT startup Invisergy Corporation, which offers a transparent, solar power generating window technology designed to offset up to 10 percent of a building’s energy usage. This YouTube-based elevator pitch contest was open to students around the world who were invited to present a 60-second pitch of their business ideas and then promote these videos to solicit as many “likes” on YouTube and Facebook as possible. All teams with over 500 "likes" were judged by an elite panel of entrepreneurs.
The MIT $100K Competition remains an economic barometer on what new ideas are being funded by venture capitalists. Since its debut in 1989, the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition has facilitated the birth of more than 160 companies, which have gone on to raise $1.3 billion in venture capital and build $16 billion in market cap. More than 30 MIT $100K startups have been acquired by major companies such as Oracle and Merck. Over 4,600 people are currently employed by MIT $100K companies!
Alice Francis, MIT Sloan MBA 2013 and the co-managing director of the MIT $100K Competition with fellow MIT Sloan MBA Adam Borelli, said at Tuesday’s finale that the renowned business plan competition will now be referred to as the ‘launch competition’.
“This year we incorporated activities to test competitors’ ability to set goals, execute against goals and reach milestones, to understand the needs of their customers and adapt to feedback, and define a clear company vision,” says Francis. “This decision was made after talking to previous years’ semi-finalists and finalists who shared that they weren't solely focused on writing business plans but, rather, actually going out and launching their companies during the contest period. Making these changes to the competition enables the MIT $100K to provide the best learning opportunities to MIT's hottest startup teams as they strive to launch.”

Hi Ron!
Sure, here is an overview of our “Legacy Project” for expansion into other cities.
Phase I – The Legacy Project
The legacy project is the first phase of i.c.stars expansion into other cities. It is a 3 day seminar designed to meet the demand for i.c.stars programs in other cities.
Each time a city contacts us, we are able to say, “Excellent! What we will need from you are the following 12 people”: a CIO, CEO, Entrepreneur, Investor, HR professional, Marketing person, Community Organizer, Workforce Development expert, Government agent, Foundation expert, Association Builder, Educator
They will participate in a 3 day seminar facilitated by i.c.stars focused on i.c.stars leadership curriculum and discovery work to identify and address the root cause of the geographic issues that they want to resolve with the i.c.stars program.
The outputs from the session become the inputs for the i.c.stars leadership training in that city.
The 12 members of the legacy project become the steering committee for brining in i.c.stars to that city.
The Legacy project is phase 1 of a 4 phased approach to qualifying, piloting, implementing and scaling the i.c.stars program and social enterprise.
Hope you are well,
Sandee

The initial 12 are part of what's called "the Legacy Project". They represent community, education, technology, business, and government. Sandee can you send Ron some of the great thinking and experiences so far with some of the cities?

They are a great organization that is scaling up very well. We are close with their Chicago lead and share lessons learned in program delivery. We invited him to speak two years ago at our big fundraiser when he was opening the office. Their founder and Sandee collaborated over 10 years ago when they were both initially setting up the programs.
The primary difference is the skills area. YearUp focuses on support and help desk roles. i.c.stars focuses on application and database development roles.

Hi Ron,
Apologies for the delay. Today has been non-stop meetings.
The CIO from NASA, Adrian Gardner, came to i.c.stars yesterday to speak with our interns at our daily "High Tea" leadership speaking series. He took a call with the White House in our conference room before going to meet with our stars.
Also, last night Sandee was invited to attend a special gathering where Mr. Gardner was speaking.

- This last email may represent the most fascinating conversation I've had all year, and it's far too complicated for a discussion now, but Eric, like Dave Ormesher, lives in Edgewater and he has some interesting things to say about choosing schools and the role of test scores
Subject: Re: Without much personal detail, why's a school in the bottom 20% OK for education?

its not ok to be in the bottom 20%. longer conversation for some time in person.
the jist is that i personally don't make the school decision based on the test scores at any given moment - they are a lagging indicator and they take a long time to move up. i personally look at the teachers, the principal, the school strategic plan, the local school council, the community and parent organizations. i look at how much participation these organizations have and how unified everyone's involvement is.
we are at a moment in many neighborhoods where all the right things are in place. the parents who are choosing to stay in the city to raise a family are *very* involved in the education process.
