CTA Train (the "El")
The Blue line of the Chicago Transportation Authority train system, commonly known as the "El" or elevated train, runs from O'Hare to the Loop area downtown. Follow airport signs reading "Trains to City" to the boarding area. Buy a fare card from vending machines at boarding area. Disembark Clark and Lake stop. Exit station at street level and take a taxi to Gleacher Center, or walk east on Lake Street four blocks to Michigan Avenue. Turn left and walk north the two blocks on the east side of Michigan. After crossing the bridge over the river, walk to the right through the plaza with the fountain between the Equitable Building and Tribune Tower. Gleacher Center is on the right at the end of the plaza, facing east toward NBC Tower.

From Midway Airport

Michael Annes is senior vice president, business development and ventures for Motorola Solutions. He is responsible for directing mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and Motorola Solutions' global venture strategy. He led the process to separate Motorola into two independent publicly-traded companies.
Michael joined Motorola in 2003. Prior to his current position, he was lead counsel for the Integrated Supply Chain organization and oversaw the Environment, Health & Safety organization. He also served as vice president, law, for Motorola's former Integrated Electronics Systems Sector.
He has more than 15 years of experience from outside of Motorola in leading merger and acquisition transactions from both a business and legal perspective. Prior to joining Motorola, Michael was vice president, general counsel and secretary of Pliant Corporation. Before joining Pliant, he spent nine years in the law department and business development group at the Quaker Oats Company, including four years as vice president of business development. He also spent four years at the international law firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt, focusing on corporate transactions.
Michael holds a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Illinois and a J.D. from the University of Chicago.
Fred Hoch is the President of the Illinois Technology Association - a next generation trade association with over 700 member companies with a focus on being a strategic development arm for its members and an economic development platform for the community. Under leadership from Fred, ITA is relentless in championing the growth of technology and its applications, from start-up companies to industry leaders, leveraging the transformative nature of technology to revolutionize industries. Fostering deep peer-to-peer collaboration, one-on-one mentoring with leaders from the technology industry, ITA uniquely integrates powerful and experienced resources to accelerate the growth of the technology industry in Illinois.
A recognized thought leader on the business models of the software industry, Fred jumps in the fray with companies each and every day to figure out their needs and provide insight, connections and promotion. If he's not doing that he's talking or writing about the incredible technology industry in Illinois that makes the "technologies that make businesses run." He also an active angel investor and when not with his family finds time to work with new companies, either as an advisor, or every once in a blue moon start something new.
Mr. Hoch is also co-founder in TechNexus, the co-working clubhouse and venture collaborative for the Illinois technology industry that is used by thousands of entrepreneurs and stakeholders each month.
Fred has had an eclectic background. Fred has worked and founded a number of technology start-ups. He also led the Software Division at the national Software & Information Industry Association. With a keen interest in international affairs, Fred worked for a time at the U.S. Department of State and has visited over 50 countries for work and pleasure.
Dan Moceri is the CEO and Co-Founder of Convergint Technologies LLC. He has 25 plus years in the security, life safety, and building management systems industry. He is currently chairman & chief executive officer for Convergint Technologies, a North American systems integrator. Convergint Technologies provides service and solutions for electronic security systems, fire alarm systems, Healthcare Technologies and HVAC control systems. Prior to co-founding Convergint Technologies, he was the president of Siemens Building Technologies Security Division for North America. During the span of his career, Dan has held positions in marketing, engineering, and executive management focused on integrated building management systems throughout the United States and Canada. Dan graduated with an engineering degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and has a Masters in Management from Northwestern University.
Larry Sanderman is the Director Corporate Development at Cabot Microelectronics.
Mr. Sanderman joined Cabot Microelectronics in 2005 and has helped to design and execute the Company's M&A and new business development strategies. Cabot Microelectronics is the world's leading supplier of chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurries and a growing CMP pads supplier to the semiconductor industry. Cabot Microelectronics' products are used to level, smooth and remove excess material from the multiple layers deposited upon silicon wafers in the production of semiconductor devices.
Prior to joining Cabot Microelectronics, Mr. Sanderman worked at GE Capital, HSBC and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mr. Sanderman earned a Bachelor's degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois (CPA inactive) and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Kevin Willer is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center. The CEC works with high-potential entrepreneurs to build the next generation of high growth companies in the Chicago area. He works across the entrepreneurial eco-system with startups, investors, government, and industry organizations to accelerate the pace of innovation and rate of success for local entrepreneurs. The CEC will also be managing, operating and programming 1871, a new startup co-working center for 400 entrepreneurs located at The Merchandise Mart.
Previously, Kevin co-founded the Google Chicago office in late 2000. In his over 10 years with Google, Kevin helped grow this office to more than 400 professionals. He led the Telecom Industry practice where his teams managed the Google marketing partnerships with several of the largest telecommunications corporations including AT&T, Sprint, and Motorola. In his additional Head of Office role, Kevin led the civic development efforts for Google's Chicago office. Before Google, Kevin held business development positions at CMGI, an early internet incubator, and USRobotics, the pioneer in modem technology.
Wally Winkel has 30 years of business experience. 20 plus years are in the electronic security, fire alarm & life safety, and building management systems industry, and 10 years in the pharmaceutical, household goods and sporting goods industries. He is currently Chief Financial Officer, General Counsel and on the Board for Convergint Technologies.
Prior to joining Convergint Technologies, he was the Director of Mergers and Acquisitions, General Counsel and Treasurer of Siemens Building Technologies. During the span of his career, Wally has held positions in tax, insurance, internal audit with some major corporations as Wilson Sporting Goods, Maytag, G.D. Searle and spend 2 years in public accounting with BDO Seidman, LLP. Wally holds a bachelor's of science degree in accounting from Michigan State University, a JD from the DePaul College of Law, and an LLM in Taxation from Chicago Kent College of Law in Chicago, IL.
Active in professional and civil organizations, Wally is a member of the American and Chicago Bar Associations, Financial Executive Institute, a practicing member of the Illinois Bar, and is a licensed CPA.

Location: Law firm of Perkins Coie, 131 S. Dearborn, Suite 1600 in the Chicago Loop.

Richard Donofrio--Serial entrepreneur with one company listed on NASDAQ. His current company is Save Wave Energy (www.savewaveenergy.com).
Michael Gruber--Venture capitalist and founder of Cornerstone Angels (www.cornerstoneangels.com), Managing Director of Scius Capital, and Managing Partner of Venture Lab.
Jeff Hardin--Serial entrepreneur with 7 startups. Principal at Chestnut Creek Partners (www.chestnutcreekpartners.com) which invests between 25 and 250MM in large-scale projects with a special focus on clean tech.
Marc Klein--VP of Business Development & Accessibility at Clean Energy Fuels (www.cleanenergyfuels.com) which is the leading provider of natural gas fuel for transportation in the U.S. They fuel over 25,000 vehicles daily at more than 270 fueling stations. Co-founder of The Vehicle Production Group. Selected by the White House as a "Champion of Change."
John Krzywicki--Associate with North Venture Partners (www.truenorthvp.com) which launched a 300 MM clean tech fund in July 2011.
Adam Lerner--VP at McNally Capital (www.mcnallycapital.com) which is an offshoot of Rand McNally. They partnered with Black Coral Capital to form The Cleantech Syndicate which has invested over 1.2 billion and plans to invest an additional 1.4 billion in clean and renewable energy companies.
Mil Ovan--Serial entrepreneur and former SVP of Firefly Energy and former CEO of NextGen Solar. Klaus Voss--Twenty years as an energy consultant and serial entrepreneur. His current startup is BioWish Technologies (www.biowishtechnologies.com/us) and he's about to launch a water company in India.
Steve Weiland--Former VP of clean tech investment banking at Stifel Nicolaus & Co. Former VP at Greentech Investment Banking. A judge at both business plan competitions hosted by the Clean Energy Trust.

ATFI (atfinet.com/contact.htm)--Applied Thin Films has created a dielectric coating for CIGS solar cells. Their coating is superior, more cost-effective, and scalable compared to the product marketed by the main competitor in the space, Beneq.
Clean Water Forever--The company produces a new kind of bacteria that removes the sludge and impurities from water.
Greencyclewind (www.greencyclewind.com)--The company has invented a new kind of horizontal wind turbine that increases air flow and decreases the demands on the fan's motor. The game-changing technology utilizes both natural wind and waste wind energy from mechanical/HVAC equipment. The wind turbine has commercial, retail and industrial applications.
H.E. System Technologies (www.hesystemtechnologies.com/servlet/StoreFront)--The company produces a state-of-the-art natural gas compressor that is more durable and efficient than the biggest competitors in the space.
Lanza Tech (www.lanzatech.co.nz)--The company has developed a gas fermentation process that produces ethanol and high-value chemicals from renewable sources that feed on industrial flue gases and waste. Their technology captures carbon monoxide gas and uses it as a resource which improves energy efficiency and profitability and reduces the carbon footprint.
Lightweight Structures (www.lwstructures.com)--The company has developed a lightweight composite framing system utilizing light gauge steel, insulation decking, and concrete. The system is cost-effective, easily installed, and eco-friendly.
Resolute Marine Energy (www.resolutemarine.com)--The company is developing technologies that produce clean energy from ocean waves.
Xolve (www.xolve.com)--Their game-changing technology enables simple, effective, room temperature processing of graphene and other nanoparticle composites, solutions, and coatings.

This competition is a multi-step process. The winners are nominated by the CCEA to enter the 2012 Later Stage Awards competition, hosted by the Global Cleantech Cluster Association (GCCA). It is during the Later Stage Awards Competition where winners are recognized as the most innovative and fastest-growing green technology companies in the world. Companies are judged by a panel of over 30 venture capitalists who collectively manage $3.5 billion in the clean tech space.
The GCCA (www.globalcleantech.org) selects 30 finalists from the cluster nominations to compete in one of 10 clean tech categories: Agriculture, Advanced Materials, Energy Efficiency, Green Buildings, Renewable Energy, Solar, Transportation, Wind, Waste, and Water). Each category winner is awarded the official title: "Best in Class--GCCA Later Stage Award 2012", and introduced to a leading, hand-selected investment community across the globe. Winners are announced at the gala event in Savannah, Georgia on November 13, 2012 (http://savannahcleanenergy.com).
Prospective Applicants-How to Apply for the Competition
To be selected to compete internationally, you must be nominated by a cluster to qualify for the GCCA competition. We are one of 38 global clusters that provides innovative clean tech companies with the rare opportunity to gain international visibility and access to professional investors.
There is no application or processing fee this year. Although we are partial to clean tech companies based in Chicago and the Midwest, prospective applicants are not limited by geography and may apply from anywhere on the planet. E-mail a short executive summary (2 - 3 pages) or PowerPoint deck (10 - 12 slides) to David Carman at: David@theCCEA.org. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 20, at 5 p.m. The contest focuses on later-stage companies but startups are welcome to apply.
