[Editor's note: May here. Long story short. Back in hospital since Wednesday night, the 7th of July. High fever (103.5) due to return of abdomenal abscess near liver. They drained it Friday and we're waiting for cultures to grow so they can decide on what anti-biotics to treat it with. The computer here in the room is bare bones and I have no word processing or even something like Notepad to work with. I have tons of mail and material at home on my computer there. Hope to be out in the next day. Please bear with me. I can't put in email headers or a table of contents. We have notes from Ola Ayeni, Ed Longanecker, Melanie Adcock here and if this works, I'll send you more stuff. I probably have more than 50 things for the report.]

Note from Melanie Adcock

Dear Ron,

Thank you for finally meeting me for lunch and being true to your word instead of just another person who's full of crap. I sincerely appreciate the massive physical effort it took you to move from your apartment to our meeting place as I saw firsthand your considerable ailments including difficulty breathing and walking. A person in your situation has every good reason to be a grouch, and I thank you for doing your best to behave and be good company. Your illness was a humbling sight as you were wearing more than ten oversize band aids and the aura surrounding the nature of your condition communicated a tough daily struggle.

Thank you for opening up about yourself and who you are. It takes some bravery to do that in the business world when you never know who's lurking around the corner to stab you in the back. You revealed to me that you are a lot more caring, compassionate and parental than you would like people to know. I've always found opening up to others far outweighs the consequences. I wish more people in business would be this way, and I thank you for being yourself.

At lunch we discussed a number of subjects but there are a few I'd like to recap for the purposes of your report: MobileAppEx, Applitite, My last job and my personal life.

MobileAppEx

MobileAppEx is a National Tradeshow event for the mobile industry taking place in June of 2011 in Chicago for the Mobile Industry. http://www.mobileappex.com A German based event planning company, Koelnmesse, Inc., is the company behind coordinating this event. Darrin Stern, Business Development Executive at Koelnmesse, Inc. heads the thought leadership and steering committee for MobileAppEx. He is a dependable straight shooter who is well versed in planning large scale complex events and making things happen. The committee meets weekly at the ITA and other locations to help shape and plan this event. As with many events of this scale it will take all year to plan. The event will be something Chicago will be proud of.

I am on the thought leadership committee for MobileAppEx to assist with exhibitor registration, audience development, and the arts and cultural outreach to showcase mobile innovation. Many great people are helping with this including Raymond Reinhardt, Keith McGorisk, Bruce Montgomery, Mark Ailsworth, Reuben Uki Lucas, Anthony Hand, and several others. It is an open transparent group of people who seek to unite all mobile groups in Chicago to get behind this event. All aboard! To find out more please visit any of these:

Applitite

A lot of people have jumped on the mobile app development bandwagon. The people behind Chicago based app develoment company, Applitite, found themselves driving this wagon almost before they even started their company. Recently this powerhouse of a little startup has secured iPhone app development for the Chicago Blues Festival, The Taste of Chicago, and the Chicago Jazz Fest. Their apps range from real estate and healthcare, to events and the entertainment industry. Led by CEO, Phil Berman, the group boasts decades of experience. Phil has exceptional leadership acumen, over 18 years of software experience, and a background in music. Key players of Applitite's design team, James Cicenia and Don Schnitzius have been close personal friends of mine for over 8 years and are some of the most dynamically creative and proficient designers and programmers in the industry today. In their free time James is a great guitar player and jazz singer and Don is a prolific cartoonist. James ran a web design consulting company in the 90's and Don has been designing for web sites with great skill and ability since the dot com era. I am very passionate about voicing how great these people are because I've known them and been inspired by their talents for years. Applitite is only at the beginning of a major success. For more information please visit: http://www.applitite.com or download for free the app they recently completed for the Taste of Chicago which can be found here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/taste-of-chicago-2010/id378223253?mt=8

My Past Job

Ugh, you love to push my buttons on this one, don't you, Ron? :) Everyone has a place they've worked that taught them about what they do and don't want in a job. My last job was one that taught me what I can't handle and what I don't want. It is because of that experience that I now have the best full time job I've ever had in tech sales at a fabulous company called OutStart with a manager who is nothing short of phenomenal. So good ultimately came out of it, and people need to go through these things if they ever want to be a seasoned executive. I strive to be good at what I do, and sometimes an experience where everything goes wrong can teach you the most. A lot has changed at my last company since I was there and hopefully for the better. I wish them well. I know you like all of the dirt, but my experience is just one perspective that, by the way, is outdated. Besides, I'm saving all the real dirt for my autobiography, LOL! Just kidding. :)

My Personal Life

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice in my humble opinion. I pledge not to get sucked in by all the tech politics and attention starved recognition seeking types as you recommend. Your advice is good for many people, Ron. I usually end up making a fool of myself one way or another anyway whether it's falling up the stairs on my way to Tech Cocktail or simply being my silly crazy self. I'd love to be part of the cool crowd, but at the end of the day I'm still the same nerd I was when I was eleven. Unfortunately, in some areas of my life not much has changed since I was eleven. What can I say- no one's perfect. The trick is to be yourself fully and completely without caring what other people think. I'm much more open today about people friending me on Facebook than I was a few years ago. I write all kinds of silly fun things on there. I am indeed a pretty wacky gal and I'm not apologizing for it. My apartment is by far stranger than yours!! If you friend me on Facebook you can see all of my art projects that I do in my free time. I've made over 100 drawings this year so far, and there is a huge collage covering most of my living room.

Because you asked I will say that I am happily single. Sometimes in life you do one thing at the expense of not doing another. I choose tech sales over most things. I hope I will look back one day and think that was the right decision. Maybe one day a handsome dashing man will sweep me off my feet but until then I'm not worried. I know some people who can build an app for that.

Thanks again for lunch!

Sincerely,

Melanie Adcock

Prior to the tradeshow MobileAppEx will support and help promote a few Chicago area Mobile Industry events including these that are happening in the month of July:

We will start sending you updates from our meetings to publish in your report with the hope that you and your readership will appreciate the transparency the information provides.
