U of C President Zimmer dating professor after split with wife
Posted by Shia K. at 1/29/2010 12:12 PM CST on Chicago Business

University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer has separated from his wife, Terese, moved out of the presidential mansion on the Hyde Park campus and begun a romantic relationship with a faculty member who is also separated from her spouse.

The university confirmed the separation of Mr. Zimmer, 62, from his wife of 35 years, as well as the fact that he is dating a faculty member, whom it declined to name. Campus sources identify her as classics professor Shadi Bartsch, 43.

Neither of the Zimmers nor Ms. Bartsch responded to requests for comment. Ms. Zimmer, director of strategic initiatives for the university's Urban Education Institute, is recuperating from recent back surgery. The Zimmers have three grown sons.

In a statement, the university says, "President Zimmer has been separated from his wife since the beginning of September. This is a matter for the family, and we hope people will respect their privacy."

The U of C says Mr. Zimmer's family will live in the president's house at 5855 S. University Ave. "during this transition period." The school continues to "conduct presidential business and host university events there," the spokesman says.

One university trustee calls the affair a personal matter and says he still has confidence in Mr. Zimmer.

"On this personal thing, that's up to others to handle," says trustee George Ranney. "He's doing a fine job."

Board Chairman Andrew Alper did not return a call. In a statement released by the U of C, he said, "President Zimmer has been forthcoming with me and with the board regarding his family situation. We see this as a personal matter, not an issue of university governance."

But the news has raised eyebrows on campus during an already tense time of shrinking budgets, layoffs at the U of C Medical Center and other staff reductions through attrition.

As a tenured professor, Ms. Bartsch isn't directly dependent on university administrators, including the president, for job security or promotion.

A university spokesman said he did not know of any university policy on relationships that would apply in this case. "The president has worked with leadership to make sure there are no conflicts of interest," he said.

Long before Mr. Zimmer, a veteran U of C mathematics professor and former Brown University provost, was named president in 2006, Ms. Bartsch had made a name for herself as a specialist in Roman literature and culture.

In 1998, when she joined the faculty from the University of California at Berkeley, she was named a Crain's 40 Under 40. She went on to win both undergraduate and graduate teaching awards, according to the U of C Web site.

Ms. Bartsch's estranged husband, James Hunter, 49, a former trader for a Wall Street firm, says he and Ms. Bartsch have been separated for a year. "I wish her all the best and want to move on with my life," he says.

The couple, who have a home on the North Side, were in the news last fall when custody of their pet Rottweiler became part of their ongoing divorce proceedings. Ms. Bartsch argued that she had brought the dog to the relationship and was granted custody by Cook County Circuit Court Judge Edward Jordan.

Why Jen Speaker, Ron's web developer is unsubscribing after more than ten years

Ron,

I have been looking at the reports lately and they aren't in my marketspace. Since I opened my own business and focused on small business owners with employess 10 and under, I am not in the tech circle you report about. I mention the May Report to clients and they don't have a clue what it is and it doesn't pertain to their business either.

I don't foresee going back to a corporate job and even if that crossed my mind I would probably leave Chicago, so even for future use I wouldn't see a need.

I hope you are doing well.

Jen

note;: please post as anonymous.

I think you may have been being too nice with your note about Willinger and his sudden frustration with Social Media -- this self professed "expert" is no more than a slimy, married sales guy trying to scam his next drink, get in bed with whoever is stupid enough to take the bait or score a free trip and call it a speaking gig.

I've never seen him pick-up the check and have heard many stories of him ordering shots of Patron when it was on someone else's dime and then leaving when it was his time up. The guy basically has his hand out all the time. Its a shock that anyone as classy as Allan Schoenberg would hang out with him.

He started Social Media Club as a way to network and now him and the person he runs it with are pocketing the money. They get everything sponsored, charge $10 and then charge sponsors $500 - $1,000. So much for being a not-for-profit.

Gatta give the guy credit for scamming his way into so many speaking ops -- hes as much as an expert as anyone who's actively been on linked in for 6 months or more. I think the only reason people tolerate him is that he is pretty good at networking and introducing people. The only problem is that he's so greasy you feel like you have to take a shower after being with him for any lenght of time.
