I just read your July 26th (or is it 27th?) post. A few thoughts come to mind.
a) The dissatisfaction of a returned Chicago expat (John K) hardly seems to be definitive proof that the Chicago "tech scene is dead". Although not myself a part of it, I pick up enough anecdotal confirmation that it is alive and kicking in the circles I travel. Since I make no claim to either being "in" nor in being part of that scene itself, it suggests that many of the belly-gazers who regularly pontificate about it are aspiring vendors on the periphery, chomping to get a piece of the pie.
b) Although I very much enjoy reading your posts - always entertaining - my suspicion is that many of the self-proclaimed experts, ala John Dallas, are poseurs. I know John personally and while I don't think he is a bad guy I do not think he is very qualified for any of the things that I have heard him advanced as a speaker about. In that same camp I would include some of the others who, Paris Hilton-like, have become prominent in your pages by dint of repetition. Names that come to mind here would be self-proclaimed China experts John Rogers and Jerry Mitchell (as far as I am aware, neither one speaks, reads, nor writes Mandarin and neither has ever lived as a resident in China - yet both make loud noises about setting up businesses in China, etc.). But plenty of others have paraded through over the years to make me feel that this is a large crowd.
My other sense is that the notoriety of your press keeps some very tuned in people away from you. I don't know this conclusively but I am aware of individuals I know in the private equity world who are prominent nationally (and in some cases internationally) and who are long-time Chicago residents but whose names have never graced the electronic pages of TMR. Since that again is another field that while not directly a part of I have some fishbowl-like access to, it offers me what I think is a reasonable yardstick for judgement.
The suggestion/conclusion I come to here, is that if you started a sister publication that truly kept sources secret and /or found some way to cross check sources before publication (ala the way academic journals cross check third parties before publishing their work) the information flow would remain the same or better but the quality of that flow would improve.
Don't get me wrong Ron: the "scoops" you often uncover are fascinating and may very well be dependent on your current style of info collection. But all too often the charlatans, crooks, and conmen slip in as well.
Keep up the great work Ron and get better soon. In the meantime I look forward to my next "TMR fix"!
