Briefly noted, by Ron May

* Well, that was a first! When was the last time TMR went out with no Table of Contents and a header of "Got go, goo"? I was powerless to stop it. I was taking the email addresses out of Elliott Black's email because I thought they were probably his personal list and I must have hit the wrong button, and oops!, before I could do anything, the report had been sent out! I guess the best way to prevent that from happening again is leave the "To" line blank.

My primary doctor who is an endocrinologist and not a wound care expert has referred me to the folks at Swedish Covenant Hospital (on an outpatient basis) to take care of the infection on my lower left leg. I will probably go there Tuesday.

* I have not seen the latest issue of Chicago Magazine yet which has their list of the top 25 firms in the area to work for, but on Chicago Tonight, Shane Tritsch did mention that Trading Technologies is ranked #3 in their survey.

I recently mentioned them in the context of Denise Bindelglass working there, but looking at their website as I did, it is easy to see that they are expanding. Lots of openings.

* I would like to get this out well before 5pm (it's obviously too late for that), especially since there is a meeting in Batavia on the Tri-Cities Broadband Initiative (See Annie Collins' note). And I have so much to talk about, it is not funny.

Here is a list of the cards I collected at the 2004 Community Wireless Summit in Champaign-Urbana last month. For those of you who are interested, these people form the core of the community wireless movement across the country. There were, of course, many others whose cards I did not get.

Dear Ron,

MEF's "Doing Business Internationally" program last night
was insightful and productive. I wish you and more of your readers
had attended. Globalization is a huge movement and one that should
become as easy as picking up a phone or sending an email.

To help people start looking for assistance, they can visit
GlobeTrade.com and click on the new resource guide:
"The World Is Your Market: Small Businesses Gear Up For
Globalization." The actual guide is available for free by downloading
'WorldIsYourMarket.doc.' The Chicago Tribune mentioned it yesterday
in the business section:

GUIDE gives help with global trade (9/13/04)
Chicago Tribune (subscription) - Chicago,IL,USA
... We are not interested in small businesses going global by accident,"
Laurel Delaney, the guide's author and founder of GlobeTrade.com, said in a
press release. ...

And remember, it is not too late to sign up for the virtual workshop I
will be giving November 2 at 10:00-11:00 a.m. CST (USA) on "What It Takes To
Sell To The World." Further information and registration can be found here:
here: http://www.catwalkconference.com/weblaurel.html.

As always, all the best,

I see you picked up the Tribs' lead on the CPS's tech nonsense--at the time this was going on I was involved in pitching the Bored of Ed on some muni-leasing alternatives and spent quite a bit of time with the group handling this-- they shared a unique combintation of cluelessness and arogance--additionally, my daughter was attending a shining star of the school system at the time--if you have run out of story ideas-digging into this pig pen will keep you going for ages--your comments on Jim Griffin and Pho were not on your usual mark--no one who knows me reads this-so i am not concerned if you post this!

Subject: Great Way to Start the Jewish New Year

Most of you are aware that my significant other has been on dialysis for the past 6 years. She has been on several transplant lists for the past 5-1/2 years. On this past Monday evening, September 13th at 7:35pm she received a call from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago informing her that they had a kidney for her. Needless to say, we proceeded post haste to Northwestern where we checked in at 11:30pm. Sally was prepped, taken down to the Pre-Surgery area at 6:30 am (today - Tuesday). She underwent the 4-1/2 hour surgery beginning at 8:45am. I am pleased to report that all is well. She is back in her room, groggy but unbowed. They are talking about letting her go home tomorrow. Unbelievable to say the least.

We cannot think of a better way to start the Jewish New Year. With all of loss of friends and of their family members over the past several months, goof news is a commodity in much too short of supply. Thank you for your many thoughts and prayers over the past and in the months ahead.

Dear Ron,

On a personal note, as a former Chicago area resident, I wanted to
share with you a recent article that was done on my work. Perhaps you
can be proud of what I've been doing in here--representing the best of
Chicago. I'm proud to have been raised, educated, and worked in Chicago
most (14 years--from 1989 to 2003) of my young 29 years of age.

The article may be found at:

Ron, thanks for the work you do with the May Report--Reading the May
Report keeps me in touch with my beloved city Chicago and what goes on
there. Thanks a million.

Subject: SmartSignal Article
To: ron@themayreport.com

Ron,
Looks like something got cut from your article on SmartSignal of 9/20/04.

"One of the Calgary guys said that they want to know when the multi-million
trucks are going to fail, and he was about to say that SmartSignal 'so they
say' with a voice inflection going upward, indicating some doubt."

Something seems to be missing.

Also, at one point you said Conkright was the initial CEO, not the founder. (And I think you are correct re someone else founding it.) Then you later said that Conkright came on board after a number of failed CEO's. Which is it? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks,

Scott Heller

Ron May here. Scott, if I recall correctly, there were a few guys brought in by Churchwell in his usual "CEO on the bench" program ... [Editor's note: Ron May here. If you got the report was that was not ready to go, there was a part of a sentence which I removed that followed this. It was unnecessarily snide and quite frankly, a cheap shot --- my specialty to be sure, but I do try these days to cut some of that out.] I will try to get the names of the initial CEOs for you. Second, I worded it poorly. What the Calgary guy said was that they wanted to know when their trucks would fail and that SmartSignal could offer them with the technology to do that, or "so they say," he said, with an inflection which I took to indicate that he still needed to be sold on the idea somewhat.

Hi Ron,
Please update and note the newest announcement.

Thanks
Anjali

******************************************
TiE Midwest is pleased to announce a special speaker event on Tuesday, September 28, "How Chicago is Re-defining the Futures and Derivatives Markets" co-sponsored by Summit Partners!

Come hear John Calamos, CEO of Calamos Funds kick-off the evening. Calamos Funds is one of the newest IPO's about to hit the market. John's market perspective is regularly featured on CNBC, and he will share his views on our featured companies and the current investment climate.

Chicago has long been regarded the pioneer in the futures and derivatives markets with flagship institutions such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). Today, two young entrepreneurial companies are emerging as leaders -- thinkorswim and optionsXpress. They are redefining the market with innovative technology and highly creative products. Their vision and promise are validated by impressive revenue growth, high industry visibility and support from large venture capital investors.

We are featuring the number 1 and number 2 funded companies in Chicago in 2004. In addition, don't miss a great networking opportunity to meet with local entrepreneurs, investors and industry executives. We will have representatives from Summit Partners, Installshield, Fieldglass, Sarvega, NetRegulus, MK Capital and many many others.

Don't miss the opportunity to hear our speakers tell their stories and explain their impact on the trading industry!

Speakers

3 Successful Entrepreneurs and a Venture Capitalist Share Their Insights

Tuesday, October 19 / 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Leaders at technology-based start-up companies need to possess traits common to all leaders, including the ability to engender trust and communicate a vision of company direction. Conversely, the wrong person in a high level position can be disastrous for start-up. The discussion will focus on which leadership skills are particularly valuable at each developmental stage of the start-up company, as well as how to identify, recruit and select key management personnel.

ITEC-Evanston?s 7th Entrepreneurial Educational Event will explore leadership in the start-up environment. Professor William White, former CEO of Bell & Howell, will lead a lively panel discussion of just what it takes to be a great leader in a technology-based start-up.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dunn Solutions Wins Borland's 'Partner Solution of the Year'
Award

Skokie, Ill.-Based Information Technology Consulting Firm
Earns Top Software Development Honor

SKOKIE, Ill., Sept. 16, 2004 -- Contrary to what many
businesspeople think, creative and cost-effective software
still is being written in the United States. For big
companies. For aggressive firms that understand the value
of serving their customers better and faster. And for
organizations that want to work closely and efficiently with
their software development partner.

Dunn Solutions Group, a Skokie, Ill.-based information
consulting firm, recently was honored by Borland Software
Corporation for its expertise - and success - in designing,
developing and deploying a global, web-based solution for
one of the world's largest financial services companies.
This award, Borland "Partner Solution of the Year," was
presented September 12, 2004, at the BorCon(TM) Awards at
the Borland Conference in San Jose. Calif.

Borland Software Corporation is a recognized leader in the
software development industry, and provides the software
tools that application developers use to align and organize
their teams, technology and processes.

The financial services company is a diversified worldwide
travel and financial services company with offices and
locations around the world.

The application developed by Dunn Solutions Group gives the
financial services company and its partners worldwide an
improved online tool for selling pre-paid products, which
include travelers checks, travel cards, gift cards and
credit cards. The company's sales locations include banks
and financial institutions, exchanges, travel agencies,
grocery stores and company-owned offices around the world.

The solution, which had to be integrated with several IT
infrastructures and work in 12 languages, was developed to
generate additional business and make transactions easier
and faster to conduct. And it has. The solution exceeds
the capacity and functionality of the previous system, and
gives the company the ability to provide benefits that go
far beyond its travelers checks program, expand its product
offerings and extend its products to more financial
institutions and retail organizations.

The solution is now deployed to 10 different countries, and
handles tens of thousands of simultaneous users and hundreds
of thousands of transactions every day. Today, when
customers buy one of the company's pre-paid products
anywhere in the United States and Europe, the transaction is
conducted using ExpressPass.

"It's a tremendous honor to receive Borland Partner Solution
of the Year," says Bill Dunn, president/CEO of Dunn
Solutions Group. "It's gratifying to win it for an
application that has helped change the way our client sells
its products. And I think it shows that IT does matter,
that U.S.-based developers still do great work, and that an
intelligent application has the power to transform the way a
company does business."

Dunn Solutions Group is a full-service information
technology consulting firm, with headquarters in Skokie,
Ill. (Chicago), and regional offices in Raleigh, N.C., and
Bloomfield, N.J. For more information about Dunn Solutions
Group, go to http://www.dunnsolutions.com.
