How are all "those" successful companies achieving top 1st page rankings on search engines like google, yahoo!, Bing, and ask?
The Search Engine Store knows how some of them got there, because they're the ones that put 'em there. From small online shops to large corporations, they've proven themselves time after time and their clients couldn't be happier.
Read what a few said:
"We were targeting highly competitive single keywords for our B2B site. Though the traffic on those keywords were astounding, if we were to achieve 1st page rankings for them on google, yahoo!, Bing, or even just one of them, it would increase our business dramatically. The Search Engine Store got us there within 6 months of signing on and our traffic has jumped from 12k unique visits per month to over 40k. This goes without saying, we will continue using them for years to come."
Rob M.
B2B Corporation
"We needed a solution for our online presence so we could stay ahead of our competition and get more business leads from our website. Being a small local company looking for local business, The Search Engine Store recommended we hit up geo-targeted city keywords within our industry. Within 4 months we have been top 5 ranking in over 50 surrounding cities on google and at least 10-15 hot leads coming in per week. Needless to say, they rock!"
Jan C.
Warehouse Facility
"A print marketing company built our online shop with over 300 products. The company did not have much experience in Internet Marketing and very little in SEO. There wasn't much success because they sold us on the age-old saying, if you build it, they will come.
They didn't come until The Search Engine Store brought in their team of experts and revamped our site so the search engines could actually find us. Thanks solely to them, we now sell in the hundreds of thousands online every month. A mere fraction of what it cost us. My partner said it was the best investment we'd ever made! I couldn't agree more."

OK, tomorrow, Saturday my choices are sleep at home (preferred), go to the air show, participate in the Fiji Urban Hunt organized by Leyla Arsan, go to SocDevCamp 2010, or run a marathon. Tonight I could go to an art event or the Hackathon. There is also an artists' event (see below.)
It amazes me that our tech community, loosely construed, is so willing to dedicate valuable and perishing time at the end of a summer to tech or social media related events rather than just kicking back with a beer or sprawling on the beach to watch the air and water show.
I don't know the details of how the treasure hunt works except what is in the blog. Contact Leyla at 312-404-2991 or at Leyla_Arsan@yahoo.com.
* After years as editor of B2B Magazine, Ellis Booker is gone as of about 60 days ago. My info. is that he got the boot. I'm trying to find out what happened, but so far nothing.
* I attended a meeting of the BGA, Better Government Association, last night at Michael Best on the 20th floor of Two Prudential Plaza. There were about sixty people there, mostly lawyers and other good government types and lots of younger people. Joel Levin and Patrick Collins of Perkins Coie spoke since they were two of the main prosecutors on the George Ryan case. They gave an excellent analysis from a prosecutor's perspective of what is going on with the Blago case. It does not look good for the prosecution right now, but you never can tell. Joel and Patrick pointed out that jurors were throwing chairs at each other in the Ryan case at one point.
There was a lot of discussion of re-trying the case. Andy Shaw asked if that makes sense from a good government perspective -- as in economics. Andy is the Executive Director now after a long career with Channel 7 as their political reporter. He just may be the tonic we need.
Three things may be a problem. First, it was all talk, and unlike the Ryan case, no action, and everybody talks. Second, the prosecution relied very heavily on the tapes and did not delve into things deeper with witnesses it could have called. Third, the old song, "It's the Chicago way" could be damaging to the prosecution's case. This is oversimplified, but we will have time for more post mortems.
The discussion on Chicago Tonight about it Thursday evening was also quite good.
The Chicago Tonight panel did not feel that this is an eleven to one deal, it could be split down the middle.
I asked after the meeting if the jury could not find Blago guilty on two counts and leave the rest alone. That could be done, but then the prosecution would probably want to re-try.
* A Howard Tullman sighting? Did HT walk by the Hard Rock Hotel at 8:10pm Thursday night going west on the south side of the street? I thought the guy looked like him. This was after the BGA meeting and there were a ton of models there for some Macy's event.

Write up for Flyover Geeks Launch event on Thursday, August 5, 2010
Ron,
Here is a recap of the Flyover Geeks launch event that was held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Rebel Bar and Grill on Clark Street in Wrigleyville.
The event was terrific. It was an interesting mix of people and it was easy to meet most of the folks and time for good conversation. I would estimate there were 50-60 people in attendance, many with vastly different backgrounds but most working in technology in some capacity.
Edward Domain, the host of the event and the founder of Flyover Geeks gave the crowd a brief presentation to thank everyone for attending and to let them know the mission of Flyover Geeks. He said that when he worked out in Silicon Valley, little attention was given to the Midwest by the folks on the West Coast. He indicated the same is true of the East Coast, they aren't too interested in what is happening in this part of the country. To quote him, "It is time for the flyover states to have a central home on the net for startup and tech related news." Edward is looking to launch Flyover Geeks nationally as a way to tell the story of technology companies making an impact in the Midwest.
After he finished his brief introduction, Edward introduced a handful of attendees in the room and they each spoke for a few minutes. They are as follows:
* Sarah Press, Co-Founder of Communiteach and Guest of Honor
* Team from Channel Awesome
* Swathy Prithivi, soon to be announced startup
* Tim Frick, Founder of MightyBytes and author of "Return on Engagement: Return on Engagement: Content, Strategy and Design Techniques for Digital Marketing"
* Jeb Ory and Kilton Hopkins, The App House
* Brian Walsh, Allegra Printing of Palatine
* Tim Jahn, Beyond the Pedway
* Brendan Tripp, The Job Stalker
* Keith McGorisk, Volunteer with MobileAppEx and Mobile Visionary Network

FIJI Water Urban Hunt: A social media scavenger hunt through Chicago
21retweet
The FIJI Water Urban Hunt is set to take over Chicago on August 14. It's a "social media scavenger hunt" based around foursquare checkins and posts to Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube.
Fifty teams of two will travel by foot and public transit around Chicago to hunt down locations and objects from featured businesses. They'll check in on foursquare when they get to each location and receive extra points if they post the checkins to Twitter and Facebook or add a tip at the venue. More points are available by posting photos to Twitter and Facebook and by completing video challenges with posts on Youtube. Bonus points are available throughout the day for "enthusiasm and creativity."
The teams will be playing for prizes including iPads, hotel stays, FIJI Water delivery service (of course), travel vouchers and White Sox tickets. After the race, all the teams will get together for an after-party and awards ceremony at SushiSamba.
"Along with an afternoon of fun, the scavenger hunt is designed to raise awareness of all the fantastic places to dine, visit and shop in the downtown Chicago area and further build an online presence for those businesses," said Leyla Arsan, founder of the FIJI Water Urban Hunt.
If you're in Chicago (and meet the stringent requirements for both Twitter followers and Facebook friends) you can apply online.

The FIJI Water Urban Hunt: Chicago's Most Exciting Social Media Event of the Summer
The Urban Hunt brings together social media enthusiasts in a Chicago scavenger hunt.
Social media fans get to test their skills as they search downtown Chicago for event clues.
Love Chicago? Love social media? Then enter the FIJI Water Urban Hunt, a one-of-a-kind scavenger competition held on August 14 that will pit teams against each other as they race to collect points and win prizes.
Participants will use the biggest names in social networking - Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and YouTube - as they race through downtown Chicago locating, documenting, and sharing items on their list of challenges. As they gather more and more points, teams will be able to track their progress as well as that of their competitors, ensuring that everyone works extra-hard to win the event's prizes.
How It Works
* Up to 50 teams of two persons each will comb historic downtown Chicago looking for clues.
* Each team will give themselves a team name and team profile.
* Each team will have a designated captain, who will be responsible for checking in on the Urban Hunt's Twitter and Facebook pages, Foursquare, and other required social-media platforms.
* Teams will be kayaking for a specific segment of their clue list!
* Teams will earn extra points for using social media in entertaining and creative ways.
* The winning team will win two iPads, travel vouchers, a year of FIJI Water Delivery and more.
* Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at an after-party sponsored by VeeV Vodka and held at SUSHISAMBA.
The FIJI Water Urban Hunt will take place in historic downtown Chicago.
Chicago's iconic skyline will serve as the event's backdrop.
The Fine Print
* Team captains must have minimum numbers of Facebook friends and Twitter followers to participate. (The second team member does not.)
* No private transportation may be used. Teams will be given a special CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) Card for use during the event.
* Team members must be over 21 years of age to participate.
* The team captain must have access to a smartphone.
* All team members' Facebook profiles must be public for the entire day of the event.
People who love social media and being challenged will love the FIJI Water Urban Hunt. It's an exciting way to explore Chicago, make new friends, and play your way to some great prizes.

Building upon what happened last year:
SocialDevCamp Chicago 2009 had over 300 attendees registered (we estimate around 250 in attendance) and attracted keynote speakers David Recordon (@daveman692) and Luke Shepard (@lukeshepard) of Facebook as well as Jason Gessner and Don Schwarz of Google. One Hackathon team turned their new idea into WinkVid, a company offering video speed dating services online which was the recent recipient of a ScaleWell grant.

Mary Spaeth comments on the manufacturing incubators

Subject: SV: The May Report: 8/6/2010: A jewel in the crown
Date: Sat, 7 Aug 2010 09:49:38 +0000
To: The May Report <ron@themayreport.com>
Hi Ron,
ICNC is indeed a jewel in the crown of Chicago and has been for many years. It is hard for me not to suggest that while the more female leadership in town is busy doing its job, well. . .
June Lavelle is the founder of the Fulton Carroll incubator which catalyzed this part of West Chicago's growth (starting in 1979) and the ICNC. You and your readers might enjoy this article posted in the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) newsletter in 1998 (when the US had a total of some 600 incubators).
http://www.nbia.org/resource_library/review_archive/0898_05.php
June was also one of the founding members of NBIA (http://www.nbia.org/about_nbia/founders_awards/lavelle.php ) and very much deserves a place in Chicago history.
June has been in Poland developing incubation now, however, for longer than I have been in Sweden. Her work has been extremely important during the transition of economies in the former Eastern European nations, particularly before they became members of the EU.
Hillary Clinton paid a visit to the women entrepreneurs in 2001, and in John Butlers 2003 book on women entrepreneurs he dedicates a chapter to the women in Poland, and of course to June. The open chapter of this excellent text is by Bird and Brush, seminal writers in the area of women's entrepreneurship.
The Fulton Carroll incubator, which started in 1980 and is one of the United States' oldest formal business incubators, won the 2007 Incubator of the Year Award from NBIA (which was won by the Evanston TIC in 1999), but perhaps you knew that and even posted it when I was not looking!
Joyce Shanahan, executive director of ICNC, whom I met just before leaving Chicago for my intended short time away, was geared to take the ICNC forward in big, but focussed ways. She showed me around the areas that had not been yet leased and talked of big plans for the creative industries (before the concept had been popularized by Richard Florida).
Chicago has plenty of jewels in its crown. Like crown jewels however, they seem to be visibile only at fancy dress balls. Glad you have brought this out on an ordinary occasion for viewing! I suspect there are even more you've not uncovered in a region of over 8 million inhabitants!
Best regards,
Mary

The operational definition of "insanity," I am told, is doing the same thing over and over and over again, while expecting different results. The same goes for trusting people who 'do' you.
Karma is an interesting thing.

HARD SCIENCE | AUGUST 13, 6-10PM
Hard Science is a gallery experience meant to showcase artistic interpretations of scientific concepts and theories. Although we live in an era of high technology - actual scientific principles, research, and theories seldom cross over into the realm of art. Many concepts that are being proven often times can be compared with contemporary conceptual art. Conversely much of the imaging and data created in research can function as contemporary art - as it proves concepts that may be disassociated from the actual representation, such as images of particles appearing as spiral streaks and years of research represented by the addition of a number on a scale.
Curators Chuck Przybyl and Edyta Stepien have invited artists from multiple disciplines to create work that will specifically illustrate or relate to understanding scientific concepts. Working closely with Teppei Katori of MIT and Fermilab they have created a unique scientific experience in the realm of art.
Participating Artists:
Edyta Stepien
Margaret Noble
Cleveland Dean
Jason Frohlichstein
Teppei Katori
Todd Frugia

Topix Stops Charging For Expedited Removal Of Abusive Posts
by Wendy Davis, Tuesday, August 10, 2010, 10:34 PM
Under pressure from state attorneys general, the community news site Topix has stopped charging users a $19.99 fee to prioritize their requests to review allegedly abusive posts.
In a joint statement with 35 attorneys general, the Palo Alto, Calif-based company also said it will aim to examine and delete any such posts within three working days. The attorneys general did not allege that Topix's priority fee was illegal.
Topix CEO Chris Tolles said the company originally implemented the fee for faster review in order to manage the 28,000 pieces of user feedback received each month. "We thought it was a really good idea," Tolles said. Tolles added that when people didn't pay the fee for priority review, the site evaluated posts within a maximum of seven days from receiving a complaint. He said that Topix will explore new products or technologies that could enable a faster response to allegations of abusive posts.
In May, a group of attorneys general from states including Arkansas, Connecticut, and Kentucky asked Topix.com to stop charging for speedy reviews. Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said at the time that an initial investigation showed that the "forums and polls" section of the site "is routinely used to post abusive or vulgar information, often about children, in blatant violation of Topix's terms of service."
Topix receives more than 125,000 user-created posts each day. Tolles said that many of the complaints it receives are from small business owners who don't like user-created posts about their companies.
