-- GoPicnic.com looking for a new Sales Account Manager
[Editor's note: Ron May here. Eric Olson and Frank Gruber have clearly told Terry (and Fred too) to stuff their City LIGHTS award that they so effusively accepted last year (2008) by holding their holiday party (Tech Cocktail 12) on the same night as Terry's (and Fred's too), December 10th. We know that Terry was eager to party with Frank and Eric because he felt their organization (Tech Cocktail) could transfuse some sorely needed new blood into the creeky, aging, wizened, cobbled together over-boarded membership of the ITA.
Terry (and Fred too) may be chronologically in their late 30s but it's a country for old men, based on the way they think and act. Their perception and approach to tech organizations would be more likely found in 1999 than in 2009 which must give Candy Renwall no lack of material to continually laugh at. One quick glance at the firms in their membership list is enough to indicate that Terry (and Fred too) have turned the ITA into a technology focused version of a regional chamber of commerce.
An example of Terry's self aggrandizing Mayberry RFD wanna be performance can be found here. This should bring holiday cheer to anybody who thinks this homespun approach could possibly play in the city of Chicago.
http://www.youtube.com/user/chicagotechacademy
I thought charitable work was supposed to be behind the scenes, not chest thumping or puffy chested. Look at all the close-up shots of Terry I Howerton II in this video and the very few shots of the new CAAT school principal. Could Terry possibly want (for ego purposes, let's say) to be the Mayor's "go to" guy on technology? A Flip replacement in the making?
The ITA is not bleeding edge. It is laggard, in fact. www.Groupon.com, one of the most likely breakout firms in the tech arena, is not a member; FeedBurner never joined; one of the ITA's own members, Orbitz, is suing the chairman of the ITA for $415K. Need I continue?
By holding their party on the same night, Eric and Frank have shelved the City LIGHTS award in the back of their sparse trophy case and are clearly saying "Thanks but no thanks" to the ITA's brandy Manhattan sipping, yellow power tie and suspenders crowd. "We will keep our Gen X and Gen Y attendees for ourselves."
I have also found out that the ITDA board specifically asked that Kathy Liu and LeAnne T. be hired by the ITA. Their concern: continuation of the events held by the ITDA. If that is true, then it just shows what a charade it was for Terry and Fred to interview Jack and Keith.
They had a very good meeting of the BNC Capital Group last night and I learned a lot. One presenter, a last minute fill-in for the baby firm which pulled out, Stealth Mark, has some interesting technology in the field of particulate tags. Duracell admits, for example, that 7% of their batteries are counterfeit.
One woman there, Lane JaBaay, also known as Laney, is a friend of Katherine Gehl's and KG has returned with her four year old child to Wisconsin to help with the family business. Laney is looking for $2MM for her website, www.shaktiwarriors.com. Also, since she ran into my brother Paul at some coffee shop in Darien on Monday, I was wondering what was going on with that -- Tiger Woods wise.
Jack Curley is now a US Patent Agent, officially. jackcurley@sbcglobal.net. He was at the BNC meeting. He told me that he had to pass a test for that certification.
I will try to have that for you in the morning along with Hardy Bhatt, TiE, and the MIT-EF and I still have more from the eFactor financing event.
Hardy Bhatt was impressive and he may be doing all he can do with the budget he has but innovative ideas are not confined to the City of Chicago. San Francisco has three people to handle Twitter. We have no money for that, Hardy said. In Chicago, city employees will be furloughed for 24 days next year and that will amount to a 9% cut in pay.
Hardy did not tell me this, but Bruce Montgomery did. The Mayor of Boston has implemented a program that is highly interactive with citizens and gets people involved at the street level in fixing and geting credit for fixing potholes.

I have to leave now because I rescheduled my dialysis to attend the panel with McCall, Downs and Chow in the morning.
I will have a check for $30 since I am a non-member and Matt McCall, for one, is happy to have me there.

May again. Brian Connolly suggests reading this:

Also, the FTC is holding hearings today in which the likes of Huffington, Murdoch, Jarvis and others have testified. At issue, the Google monopoly, and its effect on the future of journalism or media (since revenue sources are drying up due to Google).

I have a very interesting story to tell about the law firm Neal & LeRoy, LLC and the shenanigans they're puling with many area landlords and even Apartment People. Threats for class action suits and other techniques similar to blackmail and extortion, in my opinion at any rate.
