The economic downturn has shifted the workforce away from traditional full-time models towards flexible solutions for human resources needs - talent which cost-conscious companies can switch "on" and "off" when needed.
Correspondingly, a new pool of qualified talent is ready to fill these gaps for both short-term projects and entrepreneurial needs. This group of "hired guns" consists of senior-level talent, would-be retirees, and a myriad of qualified job-seekers who are hungry for a good challenge.
Our panel will explore:
• How can companies take advantage of short-term needs with "hired guns"?
• How can individuals approach the temporary workforce as a career option?
• How can social networking tools better connect employers and short-term talent?
Our panel will discuss the trends, implications and modern approaches to this new workforce paradigm. The panelists include Bob Jordan founder of the InterimCEO / CFO, Chuck Smith president of NewOffice / NewHire and Melissa Giovagnoli founder of Networlding.
The panel will be moderated by Anita Brick, Director of Career Advancement Programs at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

[Editor's note: May here. Well, today has been one giant headache. My online interface for mail filled up with over 25,000 pieces of mail and it ground to a halt. I called ANET but ANET does not exist anymore. Six months ago, most of the business that was left was bought by Cogent Corp. out East and the mail service was retained by Expedient which is all fine and dandy, except for one little detail. The purchase was six months ago and they have no idea who I am. The reason I am not in the system as a customer is that I had a barter deal with ANET, if you recall and we ran ads on an as needed basis for them.
In fairnees, the las time I had any interaction with them was a year ago when my Inbox in Outlook filled up. But they still should have handled the transition better and should have looked for weird or odd customers like me.
This will bring back memories. First there was forward.net owned by Gray Rothkopf, then ANET bought them, then ANET kicked me out and Amy Heber at ThirdCoast took me in; but then ANET bought ThirdCoast. Meanwhile ANET founder Jeff Liggett made his way to Florida to seek fame and fortune in the real estate biz down there :-( Well, Jeff, how did that work out for ya?
Everyone I knew at ANET is long gone including the tech guru Chris Zimmerman. I got bounced around a fair amount last night and this morning but a guy named James at Cogent was able to pierce the veil at Expedient and they were able to eliminate 7,000 out of office emails.
All's well that ends well but this has been a patern with ANET for years. Whenever they bought an ISP, they were always weak in doing the integration and the customers suffered. I am a customer of this firm, not "technically" a customer as one tech support person put it to me.
Now the thing works again and I had better fix my overloaded Outlook boxes so that I can download mail into those boxes.
There was an error in Friday's report. The money for Argonne for solar research was $7MM (as in million dollars), not $7M which often is used to mean thousand dollars.
There is much to talk about including the fascinating developments at Motorola but I have to wash up and get down to IIT.
One reader, Andrew Kucharski, asked what events I am planning to attend between now and the end of the year. For this week it will be TBIF today, MIT-EF Tuesday, ASP Chicago on Wednesday for the MillerCoors story; and TiE Midwest on Friday. I don't think I can make ACG Tuesday for lunch.
I'll let you know about next week. Also Tuesday night, there is the i.c. stars bash at Rocket on Hubbard. I may panhandle outside that event after MIT-EF since they are charging a mere $250 to get in.
If my name were Robert Jordan or Melissa G., I would be boning up tonight for the tough questions some fat guy with a cane might ask tomorrow at the MIT-EF. The topic is interesting because there is plenty that one can say about the issues surrounding the role of the middleman. Jordan has, my sources indicate, approached many firms aggressively soliciting that they hire him as an interim CEO. Melissa -- well, that is another story.]

*******WIRTH BUSINESS CREDIT - ACQUIRE EQUIPMENT - SAVE ON TAXES*******
Section 179 of the IRS tax law allows for accelerated depreciation on up to $250,000 of equipment for small businesses. In most instances, this applies to financed equipment, as long as the equipment is put into use before the end of the year. That means that you can lease up to $250,000 worth of equipment and immediately take up to a $250,000 tax deduction for 2009. Check with your tax advisor and if you qualify, call us to finance the equipment you need today!
WIRTH Business Credit ( www.wirthchicago.com ) is a local equipment financing company available to help you finance IT, computers, phone systems, networking equipment, office equipment, furniture, retail fixtures, point of sale systems and other business critical equipment. WIRTH is backed by a public company and provides leases for transactions as small as $5,000. Although the credit market is tight, we are still working with startups and less than perfect credit. I'd like to introduce a new iPhone application that I have been working on for the last few months.
It is called PushIt2Me and is a push-based email application. Instead of waiting or pulling your email, you can now be notified via a pop-up similar to SMS notifications. These Push messages appear regardless of the application you are running and even appear when the phone is in sleep mode.
This application is great for anyone that needs to be notified pro-actively by email.
Take a look at the application web site:
http://www.pushit2me.com/
Or, you can buy it from the app store:

Statement on passing of Michael Scott
My condolences go out to the family of Michael Scott following news of his tragic death this weekend. All Chicago is indebted to him for his selfless public service to make Chicago a better place to live. As the president of the Chicago Urban League, he provided tremendous leadership and personal counsel to me as a member of the Board of Directors. As Chairman of the Chicago Board of Education, he fought to provide the best possible education for our children and always had an ear for any parent that needed to be heard. We have lost a great and compassionate leader, a peacemaker and for me, a friend. All Chicago mourns his passing.

Harrison Street Real Estate Capital Acquires Class A Storage Portfolio in Texas
Chicago, IL November 10, 2009-Chicago-based real estate private equity firm Harrison Street Real Estate Capital continues its investment activity with the acquisition of a nine-property self-storage portfolio in Texas. Day to day management of the portfolio will be handled by one of Harrison Street's self-storage operating partners, Morningstar Properties, LLC, of Matthews, N.C.
The nine properties acquired by Harrison Street are located in excellent markets in Texas: five in the Houston area, and one each in San Antonio, Austin, Plano and Dallas. The facilities total 536,000 square feet and 5,300 units.
Harrison Street was attracted to this portfolio given the high barrier to entry markets, the current performance of the assets, the strong financing in place and the attractive cash yield of the investment.
"The quality of the facilities, stellar performance, and excellent demographics enhance our portfolio of institutional quality storage properties and we are excited to add them to our existing Texas footprint", states Rob Mathias Principal of Harrison Street. "We have been very patient building this portfolio one asset at a time or through the acquisition of strategic portfolios".
The state-of-the-art facilities include both standard and climate-controlled units and offer amenities such as wine storage, RV & boat parking, office warehouse and flex space. A digital security system allows tenants secure access to their storage units 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The professionally staffed, large retail offices offer packing supplies and boxes and will accept customer deliveries during business hours. Truck rental is available at each location.
This acquisition brings the number properties owned under the Morningstar brand to 40, with 16 located in Texas. Further, with this investment, Harrison Street now becomes one of the top ten owners of self-storage properties in the US with a portfolio of 74 properties (47,000units) throughout 16 states.
The newly acquired facilities will be re-branded as Morningstar Mini-Storage, and offer a variety of additional services to facilitate customers' needs.
About Morningstar Properties, LLC

Greetings!
I'd like to tell you about a new book on Chicago music and history, two events, and benefits to the Chicago community and its children.
I'm Dean Milano, a local Chicago musician and author. My new book "Chicago Music Scene: The 1960s and 1970s" is the latest in Arcadia Publishing's historic Images of America series
Inspired by the book, we are creating The Chicago Pop Festival. Coming in Spring 2010, Chicago Pop Festival will feature many Chicago musicians from the book.
The book launch and the Chicago Pop Festival preview will unite Chicago musicians and the community in terrific celebration of music and memory Sunday November 22 at the Abbey Pub in Chicago.
Chicago Pop Festival has named two charities which will benefit from the profits our events. The Music For Life Alliance and the Music National Service are dedicated to providing music education to schools and communities. More information about them is available on our website at www.chicagopopfestival.com
The party on November 22nd will truly bring my book to life as musicians and their fans mingle and reminisce. The party begins at 1pm, with a press conference scheduled for 1:45pm.
For one hour we will feature the finals of the World's First Ever Gloria off Battle of the Bands, in honor of Chicago Artists The Shadows of Knight's eight million selling single, "Gloria" Several members of The Shadows of Knight including Jimy Sohns and other notables will judge the finals. The rest of the day and into the evening will consist of music performances, while many of Chicago's finest musicians and I sign copies of the book. A list of performers playing and appearing is available on our website.
So you have it all! Music, a new book, history, community, children and charity, all on one excellent afternoon. How can you miss it?
Please RSVP electronically a http://chicagopopfestival.com/rsvp.php and let us know if you can join us. If you would like a copy of our press kit we'll be happy to send it to you. We also have a number of review copies of the book available. Let us know what you need.
We hope you'll come celebrate with us November 22 at the Abbey!
Sincerely,
Dean Milano
