How are all "those" successful companies achieving top 1st page rankings on search engines like google, yahoo!, Bing, and ask?

The Search Engine Store knows how some of them got there, because they're the ones that put 'em there. From small online shops to large corporations, they've proven themselves time after time and their clients couldn't be happier.

Read what a few said:

"We were targeting highly competitive single keywords for our B2B site. Though the traffic on those keywords were astounding, if we were to achieve 1st page rankings for them on google, yahoo!, Bing, or even just one of them, it would increase our business dramatically. The Search Engine Store got us there within 6 months of signing on and our traffic has jumped from 12k unique visits per month to over 40k. This goes without saying, we will continue using them for years to come."

Rob M.

B2B Corporation

"We needed a solution for our online presence so we could stay ahead of our competition and get more business leads from our website. Being a small local company looking for local business, The Search Engine Store recommended we hit up geo-targeted city keywords within our industry. Within 4 months we have been top 5 ranking in over 50 surrounding cities on google and at least 10-15 hot leads coming in per week. Needless to say, they rock!"

Jan C.

Warehouse Facility

"A print marketing company built our online shop with over 300 products. The company did not have much experience in Internet Marketing and very little in SEO. There wasn't much success because they sold us on the age-old saying, if you build it, they will come.

They didn't come until The Search Engine Store brought in their team of experts and revamped our site so the search engines could actually find us. Thanks solely to them, we now sell in the hundreds of thousands online every month. A mere fraction of what it cost us. My partner said it was the best investment we'd ever made! I couldn't agree more."

Briefly noted, by Ron May

* I am waiting to hear back from Leyla Arsan, the organizer of the Fiji Water Hunt who is on vacation until Monday. I will have the three winning teams for you then. But there may be a "whiff" of scandal associated with this event, and I know because I was there in the judging room as on observer, just killing time after I had been escorted out of the Social Dev Camp 2010 event.

I would like to believe that it was just that registration was filled up, but the pics show a fair number of empty seats -- granted, not for the Andrew Mason talk which was full, and possibly the Messina talk was filled, but I saw plenty of empty seats in other photos. http://tinyurl.com/2d9v564

The prizes given away for the two main winners at the Fiju Urban Water Hunt were not trivial. They included iPads and more, at least $2K in value. http://www.theurbanhunt.com/

Now, let me not make any accusations or hints of accusations today, but some of the judging seemed to me to have been a bit loosey goosey.

Just as the Blago jury was confused, some of the participants in the contest were confused and even some of the judges.

I personally witnessed one judge correct the mistakes of one of the teams, a team that putatively wanted to win badly. It was done very innocently and with the best of intentions. That episode involved Tim McDonald and his partner who did not win. No one was trying to cheat, but sometimes these things can go down a slippery slope and it did take a very long time for the winners to be announced. Leyla said that herself.

* Small world story. I called my brother at 3:30pm and told him to watch Jeopardy since one of the contestants was a senior from Mizzou. One of her competitors was a woman from Yale and the other person was from UT-Dallas.

The woman from Mizzou won which makes Paul happy. Large state school beats out top Ivy League school ranked in the top five colleges in the country.

Now for the small world story. Paul posted this on Facebook and Scott Kane wrote back that the Mizzou woman is his next door neighbor.

Ron, i posted this on Facebook and ironically Scott Kane lives next door to her.

College Jeopardy was just on. Mizzou vs Yale. Mizzou won $22000 to $21000. Who the heck needs a Yale education when you have the great State of Missouri - Columbia ;-)

Scott Kane commented on your status.

* Next small world story. TMR has a connection to every one of the five years of Barcamp. First year, came through an ad in the report. Second year, through an ad in the report. Third and fourth years through a reader who had connections with UIC. This year, they will be at 215 W. Ohio, a building in which I had an office from 1993-96 on the sixth floor. That was Leslie Hindman's building.

But I have to say, the marketing for this year gets a big fat "F."

Jason Rexilius has disappeared. Kevin Harriss, shame on you. I was not sure until today if this thing was actually happening.

I do plan to make it down there Saturday afternoon. In this report, you will see the agenda and the planned attendees.

* And now for my big announcement. The person involved does not know about it yet.

You know the drill.

Ron May has Hamlet tendencies, filled with self-doubt, second guessing much of what he writes after he damns the torpedoes. His health sucks. He fervently believes there is a need for this report in the Chicago tech community. In the face of his other problems, the report keeps him alive.

But there is no succession plan.

The problem with a succession plan is that you have to have a successor in mind.

Who would or could do it? Brian Connolly, Steve Lundin, Jerry Mitchell, David Dalka, John Katsantonis, Mary Spaeth, Darrell Dvorak, Jeff Meredith, Tarkus Murphy, Jed Abernethy, Matt McCall, Rob Schultz, Jim Dugan, Chris Rollyson, Monica Metzler, Richard Cross, Tom Figel, Bill McDonald, David B., Bob Geras, Jeff Gilbert, Jim Eiden or Robin Cook -- god forbid -- Jason Rexilius, and many others. It is not so easy to come up with the right person. I was being tongue in cheek with a few of those picks. How about Thornton or Dever? Tennis or Stephen Meade, anyone? Chris Sorensen?, Tom Bennett? Collin Canright? Michael Krauss?

What many of those folks have in common is that they have opinions (and more opinions) and analytical skills.

Don't misunderstand. Commentary, analysis and polemic skills are all very important to have.

And I appreciate all the contributions to the report over the years from many people and I hope they continue.
At one point we seriously discussed getting Jeff Meredith to take it over, but Jeff had bigger plans and was not about to be tied to this town.

But these people are not first and foremost reporters -- in the trenches, on the scene reporters. That, my friends, is the key to doing this job.

Or if they are reporters like Layton Olson or Bruce Montgomery, they are heavily invested in particular areas of domain expertise. Remember that TMR covers all areas of tech in the Chicago area and the Midwest to a lesser degree.

Avery Cohen does a great job at writing up panel events or speeches. Collin Canright the same.

I can get commentators by the dozen.

What I cannot get is consistent eyes on the scene reporting of what is going on at events and also someone to pick up on the so-called gossip or buzz.

I always get more from the audience than the panel in terms of informational value.

So, here is the big announcement. As of today, August 20, 2010, Melanie Adcock is the assistant editor of The May Report. I have to check with the lawyers so she can't be sued, but her name will appear on the masthead, so to speak, and she will be in charge of not only attending events, writing up events, commenting on events and companies, and where press passes are issued, I hope she can be given one. The Chicago Innovation Awards are coming up but last year, I was banned -- before the event even took place. We all know about the ITA, of course.

Melanie has not been told about this -- just that I have a big announcement to make. It is sort of like how LBJ got Sarg Shriver to take the top Peace Corps job. He announced it first and then there was no decision for Shriver to make.

I have gotten to know Melanie well enough to say that she is a fast and dedicated worker, that she does so with alacrity, that she is willing to dig into the details and get her finger nails dirty. She is what we need.

And most importantly, MELANIE ADCOCK IS NOT RON MAY.

Take note Terry Howerton, Fred Hoch, TiE-Midwest, Chicago Innovation Awards, the CEC, Maura O'Hara, Tim Courtney, Andy Angelos, David Miller, Alex Jarrett, and others.

My mission is not to convert Melanie to my somewhat jaded point of view. You'll see no proselytizing here. I believe I am a skeptic, not a cynic, but some people think I am just a sh** disturber, rumor monger, purveyor of toxic chemicals, and trash talker.

Melanie is a fresh face with a fresh point of view and you can call her naive, but she will develop her own perspective as she gets more experience. She knows a lot of people and she has already gotten several of them to contribute articles.

We don't need another expert on venture capital. We don't need someone else who knows the minute history of all useless local organizations. We don't need someone who can rattle off all the crap that went on in 1999. That will make Dalka happy.

So, as of today, provided that Melanie accepts the post, we can start in earnest. I was thinking that recently she's been sending in so many things that it should be The May-Adcock Report.

Subject: I re-launched THE PRINTED BLOG...
Date: 8/20/2010 6:17:17 P.M. Central Daylight Time
From: joshuakarp@gmail.com
To: ronaldmay@aol.com

Ron,

I re-launched THE PRINTED BLOG... just thought I'd drop you a line.

THE PRINTED BLOG was re-launched on August 18th, 2010.

THE PRINTED BLOG is the best of the web, curated by editors you know
and love, delivered each week directly to you in a beautiful print
magazine format.

We have changed our model - instead of being free, advertiser
supported, and distributed at train stations, THE PRINTED BLOG...

Is subscription based - $10.00 a month for one issue per week.
Pays all bloggers and photographers a percentage of the subscription
revenue - tens of dollars per article at first, but payment will
increase to hundreds of dollars, or more.
Is filled with online blog and photography content selected by
celebrity guest editors, including my new co-founder and photography
editor, Tyler Shields. Tyler is most recently best known for taking
photos of Lindsay Lohan - www.tylershields.com. Our contributing
editors also include Brittany Snow, Sara Paxton, Alessandra Torresani,
Matt Dallas, Meiko, Emmy Clarke and Merrell Hollis.
Is still filled with amazing blog content from blogs like The Bloggess
and BastardLife.
We re-launched because there is no publication that brings you the
best of the web, curated by people you follow and respect, in a
beautiful print format every week - and there needs to be. Sometimes,
it's just nice to sit down - on the train, or a couch, or at a café,
and to read something on paper.

We believe that not everything is always better online, by default. We
believe that the web is best suited for cutting and pasting and
searching and linking and transacting - and print is best for actually
CONSUMING information. Ironically, the more content is pushed online,
the more important print is going to become.

We believe there is value in the content that bloggers and
photographers produce, and the best content should be, and will be,
rewarded with money. ALL good content should be paid for, whether it's
in The New York Times, in TechCrunch, or in a blog that's written by
someone who still lives in their parent's basement.

And finally, we believe in the power and responsibility of the Editor,
and that the People will continue to rely on objective, educated,
informed, and ethical editors to pick stories that are important (or
interesting) to us all.

If you are a journalist, please write about the re-launch. If you are
a blogger, write a post then submit your blog
(blogger@theprintedblog.com). If you use Facebook, "like" our fan page
at http://www.facebook.com/theprintedblog and if you use Twitter,
follow us at http://www.twitter.com/theprintedblog. And of course,
everyone should subscribe to THE PRINTED BLOG at
http://www.theprintedblog.com.

Kindly,
Josh

Groupon does not seem to be relying on organic growth -- you might call it a roll-up -- they just bought a Russian and Japanese competitor

Reuters) - Internet bargain-hunters in Japan and Russia will soon be able
to get their Groupon.

The fast-growing privately held Web company, which groups customers for
everything from dental services to restaurants to try and get a price break
- said on Tuesday it acquired two rivals: Japan's Qpod and Russia's
Darberry.

It plans to soon rebrand both businesses under its own name and website
design. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Groupon - a combination of "group" and "coupon" - helps buyers band together
for group discounts from retail and service companies, who agree to the
deals after a critical mass of buyers has been reached.

The brainchild of former University of Chicago graduate student Andrew
Mason, the company has grown rapidly since it was founded in November 2008.
It received $1 million in seed money from Chicago technology entrepreneur
Eric Lefkofsky and now has more than 13 million subscribers in 29 countries,
and over 1,200 employees worldwide.

This year, it raised $135 million, much of it from Digital Sky Technologies,
the Russian investment fund that backs Facebook and games company Zynga.

"We are focusing our people and capital on markets with the largest return
on investment and these markets represent a tremendous global e-commerce
opportunity for us," Rob Solomon, president and chief operating officer,
said in a statement.

Japan has the world's largest retail market after the United States,
according to the Japan External Trade Organization. Russia saw its retail
market increase 3.4 percent in the first half of this year, based on
findings from the country's Federal State Statistics Service.

Endocyte Inc., a West Lafayette, Ind.-based developer of receptor-targeted
therapeutics for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases, has filed
for an $86.25 million IPO. It plans to trade on the Nasdaq under ticker
symbol ECYT, with RBC Capital Markets and Leerink Swann serving as co-lead
underwriters. The company has raised around $61 million in VC funding since
2001, from was joined by return backers Sanderling Ventures, Clarian Health
Ventures, Burrill & Co., American Bailey Ventures, Blue Chip Venture Co.,
and Triathlon Medical Ventures. www.endocyte.com
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. (Nasdaq: BMRN) has acquired ZyStor Therapeutics
Inc., a Milwaukee-based developer of enzyme replacement therapies for the
treatment of lysosomal storage diseases. The deal is valued at up to $111
million, including a $22 million up-front payment and $93 million in
earn-outs. ZyStor raised $8.5 million in VC funding in 2004, from Mason
Wells, Venture Investors, Prolog Ventures, State of Wisconsin Investment
Board, Hexagon Investments, Apjohn Ventures and Stonehenge Capital.

PRESS RELEASE
BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. (Nasdaq: BMRN) announced today that it has
acquired ZyStor Therapeutics, Inc. (ZyStor), a privately-held biotechnology
company developing enzyme replacement therapies (ERT) for the treatment of
lysosomal storage disorders. ZyStor's lead product candidate is ZC-701, a
novel fusion of insulin-like growth factor 2 and alpha glucosidase
(IGF2-GAA) in development for Pompe disease.

Under the terms of the agreement, BioMarin acquired ZyStor for $22 million
upfront and up to an additional $93 million if certain development,
regulatory and commercial milestones are achieved. There are no royalties
owed. The FDA has accepted an investigational new drug (IND) application for
ZC-701, investigational product has been manufactured and a clinical study
is expected to start in Q1 2011.

In vitro studies demonstrate that ZC-701 has more than ten times higher
affinity for the mannose-6-phosphate receptor compared to Myozyme, which
enables delivery of higher levels of enzyme to the lysosomes of muscle cells
of Pompe patients. Studies in the Pompe mouse model indicate that ZC-701
clears glycogen to lower levels in skeletal, heart and diaphragm muscle
compared to Myozyme and at similar levels compared to second generation
compounds that have been tested. Many experts believe that an enzyme with
more efficient uptake into muscle cells would lead to more effective
treatment of the disease. Over the next several months BioMarin plans to
recruit clinical research hospitals that can conduct clinical studies and
finalize the clinical protocol and expects the first patient dosed in the
first quarter of 2011.

"The acquisition of ZyStor gives us the opportunity to introduce a superior
product to fulfill an unmet medical need and is a perfect fit in our core
business. It not only provides us with a promising product candidate for
Pompe disease but also an exciting new platform technology," said
Jean-Jacques Bienaime, Chief Executive Officer of BioMarin. "ZC-701 has been
shown to be more effective in the Pompe mouse model than commercially
available replacement enzymes for Pompe disease. In addition, ZyStor's
proprietary Glycosylation Independent Lysosomal Targeting (GILT) technology
is applicable to other ERTs and has the potential to deliver more enzyme to
lysosomes compared to traditional mannose-6-phosphate targeted approaches.
Also, relative to our internal candidate for Pompe, BMN-103, ZC-701 has a
faster clinical development timeline, lower development costs, significantly
lower cost of goods and lower capital investment."

Mr. Bienaime continued, "As for the potential market opportunity, the
incidence of Pompe is 1 in 40,000 births. The total market for Pompe is
estimated at more than $1.0 billion, assuming 3,000 to 6,000 patients have
access to high value therapeutics and an average cost of therapy that is
comparable to other enzyme replacement therapies. We look forward to keeping
you updated on this and other programs in our pipeline."

Loren Peterson, President and Chief Executive Officer of ZyStor said, "We
are very pleased to conclude this transaction with BioMarin for the
development of ZC-701. BioMarin has a proven track record of successfully
and expeditiously developing value-added therapies for orphan diseases, with
particular strength in the field of enzyme replacement therapies for
lysosomal storage disorders. Using our proprietary GILT technology, we
believe that ZC-701 has the potential to be a more potent therapy for the
treatment of Pompe disease."

Flyover Geeks: The case for Chicago as Silicon City

Posted by Ann D. at 8/18/2010 10:11 AM CDT on Chicago Business

My name is Edward Domain and I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.

Wait ? scratch that. My name is Edward Domain and I have an inferiority complex. Actually, my city does, and as I do all my lovin?, livin?, wheelin? and dealin? here in Chicago, I share its pride and feel its pain. And brother, it has got some pain when it comes to tech startups and recognition.

Allow me to explain:

There is Silicon Valley.

Then there is everywhere else. Sorry, then there is New York (if you?re into that sort of thing) and then there?s everyone else living in Flyover Country. Just as Hollywood considers everything between L. A. and NYC as flyover country, Silicon Valley and NYC consider everything between them to be a vast wasteland of people waiting for the enlightened minds of the Valley to bathe us in the glow of their brilliance.

Silicon Valley?s reputation is well-deserved ? some of the smartest people from around the globe go there to launch companies and make their fortune. You can?t swing a dead cat around your head in San Francisco without it smacking into the head of some entrepreneur with an idea to turn dead cats into rocket fuel or biodiesel or some such.

I love Silicon Valley ? I even lived in the crucible of San Francisco for a spell and worked for a startup funded by, among others, the brilliant and beautiful Andrea Zurek, who made her initial Valley success working for Google Inc. when they were just a new search engine everyone ignored because they were using Alta Vista or Netscape. That?s another tale . . . moving on.

While I was living there I kept saying to myself the same thing I have heard over and over and over: ?Chicago should be like this.? But really, I could also substitute ?Chicago? with Minneapolis, Kansas City, St. Louis, Madison, Youngstown, Nashville . . . the list goes on and on because there are startups and brilliant entrepreneurs working on the future right now, and their stories need to be celebrated.

Many people I have crossed paths with agree with me but at the same time bemoan the fact that the start-up scene is so fractured where they live. (I?ll post about that another time).

At the Big Omaha conference, Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley tweeted, ?About to address Flyover Country, this should be interesting? as if us rubes to the right of the West Coast can?t wait to hear about them fancy Interwebs all the cool kids are talking about. In his defense, he apologized on stage (after a lot of razzing) but the point is clear: If you live outside Silicon Valley you are outside the bubble, to which I say, ?Well, we have the Cubs. I mean the Bears. I mean the Blackhawks!?

Right about now, dear reader, you are likely thinking, ?Okay, smart guy, if Chicago is so great, name a success story to come out of it.? Ever heard of a T-shirt company called Threadless? How about a software development company called 37Signals? Orbitz? I could go on . . . and in fact, I think I will: Careerbuilder, Cars.com, Groupon, PayPal and Yelp. You didn?t know some of those started in Chicago, did you? Tsk tsk.

While we discuss success stories, did you also know we have some great startups here poised to be the next big thing? Have you heard of the App House, Communiteach or KarmaKorn? How about a conference show for mobile called MobileAppEx? If not, you get a pass ? but I guarantee that you will be hearing more about them as they continue to grow and influence the world right here from sweet home Chicago.

When the crash came in ?08, it swept through Silicon Valley just like it did everywhere else. Apple?s stock dipped below $63 a share, cats started living with dogs to split the rent, and I lost my job.

I packed it in and decided to come back home to the Windy City and get back into the game from Chicago with my own Midwestern answer to TechCrunch: FlyoverGeeks. Sadly, if you ask the Lords of Silicon Valley such as Michael Arrington of TechCrunch (besides being a hero of mine) about Chicago he?ll write something like this: ?As far as I?m concerned, Chicago is just a place that your flights get delayed overnight because of the horrendous weather eight months out of the year.?

Oh Mike, say it ain?t so. Now you see where Chicago?s inferiority complex comes from and why newly minted MBAs from Kellogg and Booth scurry off to San Francisco to find funding for their new ventures. To Silicon Valley, then, I scream, ?No more! No more will you get credit for our success! No longer will our startups head west! Chicago is the center of Flyover Country and henceforth will be known as the Silicon City!?

San Francisco has 750,000 people. Chicago has 2.8 million. Have you ever tried to get a Chicago deep-dish pizza in San Francisco? Have you ever had any pizza in San Francisco? Are your tetanus shots up to date?

Chicago, Silicon City, is a center of entrepreneurship and innovation in the digital space, and I am here to introduce them to you, so stay tuned.

Oh, and Mike Arrington?

Game on.

Hi Ron,

As of 15 September I will have been in Sweden 10 years. Hard to believe really! Newsweek released its list of the top ten countries in the world in which to live, so perhaps therein lies the reason for my longer-than-intended-stay abroad.

With regards to the old home front, I would be curious to hear your personal impressions (via the report or to me) of this group: http://inflation.us/

I can't tell if it is funded/sponsored by gold traders or Ron Paul (or his alliance), or someone else. The videos are filled with hyper moral panic, but I find myself persuaded by the messages nonetheless.

Thanks for sharing my energy treatise with your readers a few weeks ago. I am not sure anyone read it, but at least I got something important to me off my chest. You probably know the feeling from time to time. (how many words have you written in the last 10 years anyway!?)

We don't see much about US state politics in Europe, but Blagojevich is getting his fare share today in the Swedish press.

On more important notes, the election campaign is heating up in Sweden, the Pirate Party of Sweden plans to offer WikiLeaks server space, a charter flight en route from Stockholm to Turkey was hit by lightning twice on take-off but landed safely again at Arlanda, and Roger Federer will play in the Stockholm Open.

Best wishes for good health,
Mary Spaeth

Note from Allyn Ziegenhagen of the MIT-EF of Wisconsin

Hi "Friends" of the MIT Club of Wisconsin,

The MIT Club of Wisconsin, because of a recent modification of our
Bylaws, has created a new Membership Category called "Friends of the Club."
This category is for non-MIT individuals, and provides all the benefits
given MIT alums, except that they shall not be eligible for election to the
Board nor have the right to vote. We will gladly welcome suggestions for
ways to improve the club, its operations and events.

The time is here to join the MIT Club of Wisconsin, as members for the
fiscal year 2010 --> 2011, from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. Your support
helps us put on the types of program that we have created in past years.

We were awarded MIT's Presidential Citation for one of these, the annual
Wisconsin Technology Achievement Awards program & banquet. The Wisconsin
club is also a partial financial sponsor of 'Women Soar,' a mentoring
program in aviation for high-school girls, that is a part of the EAA Fly-In

the site of our Tech Awards 'Small Company' winner, in order to provide that
company with greater visibility.

I would like to make you and your readers aware of some helpful resources for those looking to grow their business up to $1M/year and beyond through an initiative called 1M/1M (referred to as "One Million by One Million") - helping 1 Million entrepreneurs reach $1M in revenue/year. This program was started by Ms. Sramana Mitra, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur herself who recently has turned her attention to helping entrepreneurs.

The easiest way to investigate if this initiative is going to be helpful is to attend free weekly 1M/1M Strategy Roundtable (via web meeting) where typically 3-4 entrepreneurs from around the globe, all at various stages of growth, present their business direction and challenges to Sramana. She guides them along a strategic discussion and provides next steps and advice. Some of the typical issues discussed include bootstrapping, raising money, validating the business model, gaining focus/clarifying their story, marketing, distribution, etc. The audience can learn a lot from these often animated discussions. The 1M/1M Strategy Roundtable is open to all entrepreneurs - both to attend and to present. The schedule for the upcoming meetings through September is as follows::

Thursday, August 26, 2010, 10am CST
Thursday, September 2, 2010, 10 a.m. CST
Thursday, September 9, 2010, 10 a.m. CST
Thursday, September 16, 2010, 10 a.m. CST
Thursday, September 23, 2010, 10 a.m. CST
Thursday, September 30, 2010, 10 a.m. CST
Register Here...

She also provides numerous other resources including:
1. The Entrepreneur Journey methodology of building a business, which has been distilled from doing dozens and dozens of interviews with successful entrepreneurs. The nature of which is that entrepreneurs must be immersed in their subject matter, validate their product/service in the market, generally bootstrap until the business has been validated and avoid "spray and pray" mistakes of trying to address too many differing markets. Common sense, yes, but many still make mistakes in this area.
2. Numerous inspiring interviews/case studies on her site of companies that were built from scratch, many without any financing
3. Numerous interviews/case studies with current trends of what angel and VC investors are are currently looking for
4. Articles on vertical topics such as CleanTech, Healthcare IT, Online Advertising, Gaming, Open Source, Outsourcing, etc.
5. Incubation Radar page - exposure for companies who have shown validation of their business model
6. Deal Radar page - exposure for companies who have reach $1M/Yr in revenue
7. Daily email of new interviews/case studies of up and coming companies, trends, etc.
8. Weekly Strategy Roundtable web meetings where entrepreneurs pitch briefly Sramana their business plan and she provides strategic advice. The audience can learn a lot from these often animated discussions. She also shares her extensive Rolodex of contacts with those who pitch as well.
9. Four Entrepreneur Journeys series of books (Volumes I-IV) are available electronically and in print (note: all the material in books is available free on the site)

These are of course all free on her web site http://sramanamitra.com. Her entrepreneurial teachings have helped demystify entrepreneurship and have personally benefited me by helping me become more focused over the past several months.

Another day another union bailout

Another day another union bailout
By: Vincent Vernuccio
Special to The Examiner
08/16/10 12:05 PM EDT
A bill introduced by Sen. Robert Casey's (D-PA) is a micro targeted bailout which could have drastic ramifications, resulting in billions of taxpayer dollars being funneled to union pensions.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) gave a boost to a massive taxpayer bailout of union pension funds just before Congress' August Recess. Durbin, who is Senate Majority Whip, joins notable Democratic Senators such as Roland Burris (D-IL), and Al Franken (D-MN) as the fifth cosponsor to Casey's Create Jobs and Save Benefits Act of 2010.

The bill would create a special fund in the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC.) PBGC uses private premiums paid by pensions to insure retirees are paid if a plan sponsor becomes insolvent. If passed, the bill would use tax payer dollars to shore up some underfunded union pension plans. The use of public funds to insure private pension plans is a first for PBGC which has not used public moneys in the past.

Last October the Washington Times was the first to identify bailout language in similar legislation, introduced in the House sponsored by Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-ND).

The draft would allow union-controlled multiemployer pension plans to form alliances with one another. It also would create something known as a fifth fund that the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corp., with taxpayer help, would use to prop up failing union pension plans.....

Mr. Pomeroy proposes putting the taxpayer on the hook now. In a stark departure from the traditional role of PBGC, the draft bill states that "obligations of the corporation that are financed by the [fifth fund] shall be obligations of the United States." For the first time, PBGC liabilities will be borne by taxpayers. The fifth fund could make available billions of dollars to prop up union pensions.

Union pension plans have been in trouble for years and the latest economic downturn has only exasperated the problem. In 2008 the Department of Labor listed 230 union plans as being either endangered -less than 80% funded-, or critical -less than 65% funded-. In a year the number skyrocketed to 640.

In 2009, Moody's Investors Service estimated the union pensions to be underfunded by $165 billion dollars.

PBGC has not fared much better. According to a report released earlier this year, PBGC has a deficit of $21 billion. The report also predicted the Corporation's shortfall could be as high as $34 billion by 2019.

Today, the Wall Street Journal reported:

The PBGC is already significantly underfunded and taxpayers are its ultimate backstop. Yet the Casey bailout could dump as much as $165 billion in new liabilities on the PBGC, while multi-employer plans would get a clean bill of health. What a deal.

This cause has taken on new political urgency, and no less than Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin has endorsed the bill. The reason for the rush is new rules that may soon be issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), the green-eyeshade outfit that dictates how companies keep their books. Those proposed rules would expose the multi-employer time bomb.

Anti-spending watch dog groups have been sounding the alarm on the Casey Bill and Pomeroy Bills for months. In May, 50 free market and anti-tax organizations co-signed a letter urging congress to "oppose legislation which provides the framework for a taxpayer funded bailout for failing pension plans."

The Casey Bill has been slow to gain traction, but now, with the second highest Democrat in the Senate backing the bill, that all could change. When Congress returns from recess a new bailout battle is likely on Capitol Hill.
