Ron,

I give David, Jason, Kapil and i2A a lot more credit for their efforts than might be apparent to you. Kapil, with Sam, architected Excelerate. They also were key in the Viewpoint seed round and have been central in connecting players in the community here when a lot of chaos is running through the markets. I predict that you'll see an increasing level of this kind of activity at i2A.

Hope all is well with you, Ron!

Hello Ronald,

Like a Venus flytrap, a newly discovered chemical material is a picky eater-it won't snap its jaws shut for just anything. Instead of flies, however, its favorite food is radioactive nuclear waste.

Mercouri Kanatzidis, a scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, and Nan Ding, a chemist at Northwestern University, have crafted a sulfide framework that can trap radioactive cesium ions. This mechanism has the potential to help speed clean-up at power plants and contaminated sites.

Jim Woodhill, Peter Tapling and Authentify

Subject: RE: John, is Peter still there? - YES.
Date: 2/25/2010 10:39:23 A.M. Central Standard Time
From: john.zurawski@authentify.com
To: RONALDMAY@aol.com

Hi Ron,

Yes - Peter is still here.

Jim Woodhill hired Peter as Employee #1 - and Jim (as a serial entrepreneur who has done very well ) continued to work with some of his other holdings while allowing Peter and I to build Authentify. This Plains Capital vs. Hillary Machinery thing has spurred him into action. There have been nearly $100 Million Dollars in fraudulent wire transfers since August. The targets have been School Districts and Small Businesses banking at community and regional banks. While the banks and FBI have been able to recover $60 million - that's still $40 million taken by cybercriminals. The $229k that Hillary Machinery 'lost' - has hurt them - but was not fatal. That was not the case for a marketing services firm in New York http://www.krebsonsecurity.com front page story on the site. That will likely file bankruptcy after losing $160,000 in a similar fashion. For them it was fatal.

As a threat to small business - malware is very dangerous. What Jim is hoping to point out, is that the fabric of the country's economic engine is under direct and organized attack. If the status quo were to be judged as "commercially reasonable", then more small businesses will be struck with death blows. As news of those failures circulate, small businesses will abandon their smaller banks for the conglomerate money center banks THAT DO PROTECT THEIR CUSTOMERS - and the community banks will begin to fail. If small business creates the most new jobs - much of the financing for those businesses come from the smaller banks that "know them" and are willing to take a risk. Authentify's own bank is Silicon Valley Bank, because when we started Authentify, we couldn't get a decent line of credit from a Chicago area bank to save our lives. SVB understood what we do, understood the risks - and gave us a the help we needed. The same is likely true of PlainsCapital Bank. They, Plains Capital, have $4 Billion is assets - which is 'small' in today's banking terms, and I suspect they have many small business clients in Texas. For comparison, Chase is $1.7 Trillion in assets, Cole Taylor Bank in the Chicago Area has $4 Billion in assets and targets the areas small businesses.

Jim Woodhill wants to petition Congress because products, (like Authentify - and we aren't the only ones), capable of stopping fraudulent wire transfers have been around for years now. There is considerable "guidance" to the banks to do so, as long ago as 2005. For instance FDIC-FIL-2005, FDIC FIL-66-2005 titled "Guidance on Mitigating Risk from Spyware http://www.fdic.gov/news/news/financial/2005/fil6605.html , which states directly, ""Investigate the implementation of multi-factor authentication methods, which would limit the ability of identity thieves to compromise customer accounts, even when a thief has a customer's ID, password and account numbers." The financial services industry was warned in August that it was under increasing attack. August 26, 2009 FDIC:SA-147-2009 Fraudulent Electronic Funds Transfers http://www.fdic.gov/news/news/SpecialAlert/2009/sa09147.html

Subsequently, if a bank chooses to use Internet and e-Banking for all the advantages it can bring and chooses to ignore the guidance and warnings - it should not be "commercially reasonable" to then stick your customer with the losses as a result. Jim believes, (as do Peter and I ), that the regulations that protect consumer accounts online, that would be Regulation E, should be extended to commercial accounts.

(Regulation E, is issued by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System pursuant to the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, 15 U.S.C. 1693 et seq. http://www.fdic.gov/regulations/laws/rules/6500-3100.html )

How could Authentify have helped PlainsCapital protect Hillary Machinery - you can see that here: http://www.authentify.com/HillaryMachinery/index.html

So - Ron, sorry for the long answer to a short question. Peter is still here, but this PlainsCapital thing has got our Founder's dander up.

I hope you're feeling well today! Cheers!

Do not publish my name or email. I saw this story in your report. Is Terry Howerton/ITA actually taking credit for launching 35 companies at TechNexus? What an absolute load of crap and exaggeration. I know several of these companies well and ITA had zero to do with launching them. I have heard so many false statements from those guys it's amazing.

Hey Ron, did you see this yet??

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-0224-motorola-california-20100223,0,5853421.story

I guess I would argue that Motorola hasn't been all that influential in the Chicago tech scene for years, and I'm still not sure what "tech bubble" they are talking about.

We have some very good local nanotech and biotech action, and software folks like Spyglass have impressed me...however, with the collapse of telecom some years back, I don't think that Tellabs, Alcatel, Nortell etc. are quite as vibrant as they used to be. The big Tellabs building on I-88 in Naperville has big signs advertising office space.

Good morning Ron,

I just read your latest posting. One thing that surprises me is despite the fact that you sign your name "Ron May" in TMR people continually address you as "Ronald". Do you interpret that as politeness, ignorance of your preference, or some measure of condescension? Inquiring minds need to know!

Ron May here. The answer to your question is simple. People who don't know me only know that my AOL address is ronaldmay@aol.com not ronmay@aol.com. Everyone who knows me calls me Ron and the only exceptions were my paternal grandmother who called me "Ronnie" until I was well into my 30s -- old habits die hard. And my mother calls me Ronald when she wants to make a point. For example, when I was a teenager, and I was irritated about something, I would stand by the fridge and threaten to eat everything in the refrigerator. That was an odd threat since the only person it would hurt would have been me. Dickie Reck, did you catch that grammatical correctitude? My mother would say with an air of formality, "Ronald, you just go right ahead."

I did precisely that and now at age 53, you can see the results. :-(

Daliah Saper to Give Presentation about Computer Fraud and Abuse Act at NetSecure 2010 Conference

Thursday March 4, 2010

NetSecure 2010

Illinois Institute of Technology

Rice Campus

201 East Loop Road

Wheaton, Illinois 60189

The 8th annual IT Security and Forensics Conference and Expo at the Illinois Institute of Technology will be held on March 4 at IIT's Wheton, IL Campus. This multi-track, technical conference attracts 200+ professionals for an intensive, one-day schedule that includes discussion and debate over ethical hacking, security, digital forensics and steganography, policy and compliance, privacy, security of wireless and cloud computing, identity theft, and much more! If you are involved in IT security or forensics, you should attend this conference.

Daliah's Presentation is titled: Prosecuting Computer Espionage

Here is the abstract:

In response to concern over the lack of available laws to combat emerging computer crimes, Congress enacted the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act in 1986. Several amendments later, the CFAA continues to be the primary vehicle for fighting all forms of computer espionage and unethical hacking. Daliah Saper's presentation will provide an introduction to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. She will illustrate, with specific case examples, how the CFAA has been applied to combat unauthorized and damaging digital access caused by rouge employees, business competitors, and hackers.

Illinois Institute of Technology

McCormick Tribune Center

Chicago, IL 60616

Day of Mobile is an all day event for mobile developers and enthusiasts that will take place at IIT on March 6, 2010. The overall goal of the event is to better prepare both Chicago's application development community and companies with mobile initiatives for the upcoming mobile revolution. We will cover a myriad of different topics relative to mobile development and strategy such as platform SDKs, cross platform development, multimedia, CMS/SMS, mobile business models and many more. The event will begin with a breakfast at 8AM and conclude after a keynote speech and hackathon awards ceremony at 4PM. Throughout the day, there will be talks running concurrently with one another in two adjoining ballrooms.

Daliah's presentation is titled: The Legalities of going Mobile

Here is the abstract:

Software development for mobile applications creates a whole slew of new legal issues both for the developer creating the mobile application and the businesses bringing the application to market. In her presentation, Daliah will highlight some of these key legal issues, addressing, for example, new copyright and trademark licensing concerns, the use of open source in mobile development, and how to negotiate non-traditional revenue sharing models.
