About The May Report

Dear Readers and Guests,

There is a definite and unfulfilled need for hard, straight information in our software and IT marketplace. Our local publications aren't doing it. They rarely contradict the people they interview, probe below the surface or say anything controversial. The goal of building a more prosperous software and IT community is not served by telling "feel good" stories alone.

The May Report started as a personal project, a natural extension of the information gathered through friends, associates, and networking. It has transitioned into an active hub of Chicago news owned by us, but powered by the community.

Our emphasis is typically on start-up or early stage software companies, but we also cover more established firms: we cover key moments in the growth of firms, or their decline as the case may be.. Topics include a wide range of strategic issues relating to growth & how the system works. We additionally cover the local media, key high tech players, local high tech organizations and the players in the infrastructure like the lawyers, accountants, consultants, financing people, and more.

A list of the things we'll do on a regular basis:

  • Monitor and correct information in other publications.
  • Report on financing deals for software firms, especially at the level of seed capital from angels and rounds 1 through 3 of venture capital. Report on local sources of funding and deal terms.
  • Report on the comings and goings of key players.
  • Watch organizations and report on the effectiveness of their activities.
  • Watch ethical issues and conflicts of interest.
  • Provide real and useful on the local market touching on organizational, technological, economic, and staffing issues.

We believe in giving specific information, so we do name names and we strive for intellectual honesty. However, we do not reveal sources who wish to remain unnamed. What distinguishes The May Report is that it is a serious attempt to get the "real" story, the inside story, and there is a certain amount of scuttlebutt as well. We sincerely believe that this report adds value to the community and to entrepreneurs. There is no other report in Chicago like it.
